I worked at OIC of America, Inc full-time

    Pros

    - Learned a lot about organizational and grants management; great to work with an organization that held the legacy of the Reverend Leon H Sullivan.

    Cons

    - Management needs to be held accountable for arbitrary decisions made; additional transparency is needed regarding human resource policies; minimal to no room for advancement; appears to be no program growth or opportunities even for lateral movement.

    Advice to Management

    - Bring in leaders that can lead and want to work for the Organization.

I have been working at OIC of America, Inc full-time

    Pros

    Laid back atmosphere
They seem to have finally gotten rid of the roaches and mice

    Can't think of any others

    Cons

    No sustainable funding plan
No infrastructure - even getting a postage stamp is a challenge
Building is old and falling apart
    Lack of leadership and vision
No salary increases or opportunities for growth or promotion
    No support for staff development
    Lots of disgruntled employees

    Advice to Management

    Hire some real leaders
Come up with a real plan for creating an organization that is sustainable
Replace the board with members who can fundraise
Engage your talented staff to grow the organization instead of shutting them out
Treat staff as if they are valued instead of expendable
Greater transparency in decision making is needed

    Pros

Motto is to "Help People Help Themselves." Nonprofit organization dedicated to social uplift. Great history. Flexible work environment. Great work-life balance.

    Cons

Organization has not transitioned with the changes to workforce development. Fundraising is non-existent. It is a shell of it's former self. No longer centralized. Affiliates are affiliates in name only. All are fully independent.

    Advice to Management

Improve fundraising and monetary support of the affiliates. Appoint people to the board of directors who can raise money. Look to duplicate successful affiliates who have made the transition to how workforce development is done today (e.g. JobTrain).

    Pros

Time off, holidays, sick leave, etc. is very liberal. Management could be very understanding about time needed to handle any variety of issues.

    Cons

Obtuse and incompetent management. Management that felt a sense of entitlement, and never lead by example. Very fiscally irresponsible budget management. Poor planning and time management for preparation for major tasks.

    Advice to Management

The old management regime is now gone. Current leadership is focused and committed. They definitely need to be proactive in restoring faith in how viable they can be in helping their network of affiliates and former partners.
