I worked at Office of Naval Intelligence full-time

      Pros

Opportunity to be fully responsible for an assigned portfolio with a tangible impact much earlier than in many other IC agencies. Mostly good work-life balance. Opportunity also for civilians to gain and use niche expertise unlikely to be duplicated elsewhere in IC. Great sense of mission in some areas.

      Cons

Less known and appreciated in the Intelligence Community than it should be, so the experience is sometimes seen as less prestigious. Can be disconnected from many broader IC opportunities. Promotion potential limited once mid career because the ratio of higher rank (GG-15, DISL/DISES and SES) positions is much lower than in some sister agencies, which creates bottlenecks for talent and retention problems in some areas.

      Negative Outlook

I have been working at Office of Naval Intelligence full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Only agency to focus directly on Maritime Threats. If you are looking for an easy federal intelligence job, you found it. Nobody gets fired. If you just want to clock in/clock out, ONI is for you. PTO is nice if you are prior military.

      Cons

Located in highest crime section of D.C, on a federal facility with no access to food trucks/multiple food options. No room for growth, workforce mostly consists of retired Navy that are just double dipping from their retirement. This equals zero drive and innovation from workforce. Managers are retired Navy analysts, and have marginal leadership skills. If you are eager and young, this place is the complete opposite....

      Advice to Management

Expedite hiring process to get younger people in. Promote younger managers. Fire lazy government workers who just do the bare minimum. Make jobs salary vice hourly to support crisis situations.

I worked at Office of Naval Intelligence for more than a year

      Pros

Extremely challenging work, fantastic work/life balance. The people working there are among some of the most patriotic in the entire country. Very smart coworkers, amazing leadership.

      Cons

Physical location of the compound is in Suitland, MD which isn't exactly the nicest place in the DC area.

      Advice to Management

      Keep up the great work!

      Neutral Outlook

I worked at Office of Naval Intelligence full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Good work-life balance Strong Division Leadership Potential to make a difference

      Cons

Many employees overall lack quality. Some of the older employees who have been here a long time are outstanding and believe in the mission, but many younger hires had ONI as their "safety" federal job application and are mediocre. This is a gross generalization, but it is how I feel.

      Advice to Management

Higher-level leadership cares more about face time than performance.

      Positive Outlook

I worked at Office of Naval Intelligence for more than a year

      Pros

The missions are important and impact worldwide customers. There are plenty of opportunities for junior and senior enlisted military members to take advantage of. Additionally, the new Commander is a very down-to-earth, hands on leader. Also, the Suitland metro station is just up the road and makes local, daily trips to DC convenient.

      Cons

Some military leaders there are only that by rank and not by character. The neighborhood around the complex isn't the safest. But security on the complex is great.

      Advice to Management

Hire a permanent party to run the Reserve Management Office that doesn't have a typical two or three year rotation. There needs to be some consistency in that position.

I worked at Office of Naval Intelligence for more than a year

      Pros

The branch of ONI I worked for is called Hopper Information Service Center located in San Diego. It is a small military command. It is a fantastic way to start a military career. The leadership takes care of their personnel. It is a strong way to learn about network topology and developing trouble shooting isolation techniques.

      Cons

The SCIF is manned twenty-four hours a day. This is not always a negative because day and night watch personnel rotate duties, and night watch is a great way to forward personal and professional development.

      Advice to Management

Continue taking care of your people as well as you have in the past.
