I have been working at Opower for more than 3 years

    Pros

Opower has been a fabulous place to work for the past 3+ years, but the Oracle acquisition has ruined all of that in less than 3 months. If you join today, you'll get to work with some of the smart, interesting people that made Opower great. But act quickly, because they'll all be gone soon. - Free snacks, free massages, and free Friday lunches are still around - Good office locations: near Montgomery BART in...

    Cons

    - Opower's best and brightest are fleeing in droves, while only the most mediocre, least experienced, or most ossified employees remain to welcome our corporate overlords. It's only going to get worse over the next few months. - Oracle people and policies are already changing the fast-paced, get-it-done, fun-loving culture of Opower. We're going from Google Apps to Oracle's crappy "Beehive" alternative, from unlimited...

    Pros

7 months ago I would have given a 5 star review, now ..... 1. Highly motivated people. 2. Culture was once amazing, though declining a lot. 3. Excellent growth and learning opportunities in a short time span. 4. Great friendships 5. Amazing Holiday party, perks, office events, off sites, etc. 6. Investing some time here can really open up some amazing opportunities elsewhere As bad as some things have gotten, Opower...

    Cons

    1. Pay starts out high for inexperienced hires, quickly begins to seem low. Pay should be higher outside of R&D org. 2. Some roles in client success become monotonous and repetitive. 3. A lot of over reacting drama in the client success organization. 4. Career opportunities and raises slimming fast in client success. 5. Company culture has declined rapidly, a few mishires, and poor leadership has contributed to this....

I worked at Opower full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-Good PR EE story -Office shuts down last week of the year -Decent benefits -That's about it

    Cons

-The utility industry is too slow to adopt anything -Enshrines duplicitous business practices to employees and its customers -Oversells snake oil and advocates trickery or cloudy language to win a major deal -Has been selling the same products for the last four years without much innovation -Death by a million slides in every internal and external meeting -Engineering bares brunt of suffering the delivery consequences...

    Advice to Management

You had a great mission but now it's plain dubious. Start by replacing your nepotistic friends with experienced executives and veterans in the industry. Listen to your employees, don't just pretend to with annual surveys.

I have been working at Opower full-time for less than a year

    Pros

I've only been here a short time and I ALREADY feel like I've been here for MUCH longer! And that's a good thing. I've learned so much and the people doing the training are excellent. The OpowerU sessions were extremely helpful, and a great way to personally get a feel for each area of the company and ask questions. The benefits Opower offers are wonderful and the fact that they offer supplemental PAID maternity leave...

401k matching would be nice but I'm sure that's coming down the pike at some point. I'll have more in this section as my employment continues.

    Advice to Management

Stay engaged with your staff, of all levels. Walk around, introduce yourself, talk to people on a personal level and ask questions. Most people who loves their jobs think they have a GREAT boss. Be that boss!

I have been working at Opower full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Opower truly is a great place to work. We have dogs in the office, food that is stocked everyday in the kitchen, massages onsite once a week, happy hours, and we get to work around some of the smartest people in the DC area. Generous equity and PTO. Plus we get off for a "winter break" it's like being in college all over again! The work is challenging, and if you are not challenged, there is always more work to be done....

I have been working at Opower

    Pros

Very intelligent, driven co-workers Senior management is very friendly and receptive to ideas Most employees are highly engaged with the Company's mission Dog-friendly workplace Cool downtown location in a historic building in downtown SF (but moving to a bigger, better space soon)

    Cons

Everyone's main complaint is the lack of a 401k match. (Management is aware and has addressed this head-on, so my guess is that it'll be added some day.)

    Advice to Management

Get to the 401k match sooner, not later. Continue the path on management development for managers. Continue to hire smart people!

I have been working at Opower full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Mission Driven - help save power consumption in the world Smart and hard working engineers Still a young company, with plenty of career opportunities to grow (even though the path to career growth is NOT defined)

    Cons

For a tech company in SF Bay area, the benefits are way below par (assuming they exist) - specially for a start-up/ young public company - No free food (except crappy Friday lunches), no full health insurance coverage, no 401k match, no Employee Stock Purchase Program. Really stingy, even after being public - and there is a difference between being thrifty and stingy. Examples:...

    Advice to Management

Be less stingy, try and understand what your employees truly care about - and be honest about what action you are taking to address it. If you do want to differentiate yourself, just being a mission driven business wont get you very far in SF bay area tech scene - it may only work in DC. Talk doesn't substitute action. Have better benefits, and if you can't afford to match up - be upfront about it. Its better not to...
