I have been working at Oxford University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The chemistry department is extremely well-fitted with all the necessary equipment to perform research. The building is relatively new and the working environment receives lots of natural light. It is a very inspiring place to work in.

    Cons

The only downside is the UK weather.

I worked at Oxford University (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great diversity - very international place to work. Plenty of opportunities to collaborate if that's what you'd like to do. Lots of interesting seminars that you can attend to expand your knowledge and to network.

    Cons

If you are not a member of a college, it can be very difficult to fully integrate into the university/city so I'd highly recommend becoming affiliated with a college -for both socially and academically.

    Advice to Management

There are a plenty of old school management styles/division with a lot of long term members - there can be quite a lot of resistance to change, so listen out for younger voices. Also given the very competitive nature, the working atmosphere can be quite fierce - definitely would benefit from compulsory training for group leaders!

I have been working at Oxford University as a contractor (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Extremely flexible hours and freedom of research. Really interesting science. International environment. Top quality instruments.

    Cons

Too busy, more people than space allows. A waiting list of 2-3 weeks for using popular instruments. Makes it difficult to focus on research.

    Advice to Management

Obviously, many want to get into the Chemistry department at Oxford university. However, to keep the high quality of research we need to match the number of people to the available space and facilities we have.

I worked at Oxford University (More than a year)

    Pros

An absolutely lovely place to work at - people are approachable, easygoing and incredibly clever. Being in Oxford definitely opens a lot of career opportunities too: I since moved out of academia into management consulting, and trust me, having Oxford on your CV really makes a difference!

    Cons

People can be a little stuck up at times thinking they are a little more special than others, but this is mostly limited to students who I guess are just finding their feet in life (bless). Anyone whom you actually work with - an absolutely great bunch!

for being a University, they have careful HR
    flexible time

    Cons

it very much depends on the department and the supervisor
you can be left a bit "abandoned"

I have been working at Oxford University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible, depending on your line manager you have the freedom to research all you want.

    Cons

People are not wiling to collaborate much because they are too focus in what they are doing, very competitive environment with little room for real development and science advancement.

    Advice to Management

Increase the funding towards research and stop trying to make money investing donations and running the university like a company!
