I have been working at Oxford University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Oxford has has a brilliant reputation, and that will add gravitas to your own profile by working here. Excellent access to resources to support your research. Collegiate culture across departments.

    Cons

Very limited career prospects upwards within the university (unless you're already faculty), out of touch management (middle management, and up to the top), poor career development support from supervisors. Too easy to become an eternal postdoc for fear of leaving an institution with a world-class reputation.

    Advice to Management

Listen to and value your employees (all of them, including administrative support, research staff, as well as academics) better.

I have been working at Oxford University (More than a year)

    Pros

Training opportunities, friendly staff, care for H&S, reputation, good work-life balance, benefits.

    Cons

Inflexible and stuck traditional working methods that some are reluctant to change and open to working place trends from the private sector. Clear hierarchical structures not only by job-titles and grades but directly reflecting the way you have to address to one another, the way communication often stays only at the top of the pyramid as is not feed to support staff, making them feel disconnected to the strategies.

    Advice to Management

Be more flexible, respect and be proud of the history of the University and also understand the importance of input of support staff. Communicate better with lower grades.
