I worked at Oxford University (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great diversity - very international place to work. Plenty of opportunities to collaborate if that's what you'd like to do. Lots of interesting seminars that you can attend to expand your knowledge and to network.

    Cons

If you are not a member of a college, it can be very difficult to fully integrate into the university/city so I'd highly recommend becoming affiliated with a college -for both socially and academically.

    Advice to Management

There are a plenty of old school management styles/division with a lot of long term members - there can be quite a lot of resistance to change, so listen out for younger voices. Also given the very competitive nature, the working atmosphere can be quite fierce - definitely would benefit from compulsory training for group leaders!

I have been working at Oxford University full-time

    Pros

The University of Oxford (informally Oxford University or simply Oxford) is a collegiate research university located in Oxford, England. It has no known date of foundation, but there is evidence of teaching as far back as 1096,

    Cons

It grew rapidly from 1167 when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. After disputes between students and Oxford townsfolk in 1209, some academics fled north-east to Cambridge where they established what became the University of Cambridge.

    Advice to Management

Being a city university, it does not have a main campus; instead, its buildings and facilities are scattered throughout the city centre. Most undergraduate teaching at Oxford is organised around weekly tutorials at the colleges and halls, supported by classes, lectures and laboratory work provided by university faculties and departments.

    Pros

Academic freedom, direct teaching contact with students, amazing quality of other academics to interact with.

    Cons

Some anxiety from the need to publish, certain courses need innovation.

    Advice to Management

Look at core teaching syllabi and make sure they're well-calibrated.

I worked at Oxford University part-time

    Pros

Could help with access schools and set curriculum, and staff running the programs were genuinely dedicated. A lot of thought put into the programs at a senior level.

    Cons

Day-to-day running of the access summer schools could be chaotic, with little notice given regarding changes. Without teaching experience one might imagine it is difficult.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps some advice on teaching students could be helpful, as postgraduates do not necessarily know how to teach successfully.

I have been working at Oxford University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Oxford Uni has amazing resources in terms of it support, admin, training, etc. In these terms they are probably the best in Europe.

    Cons

Unfortunately the admin is somewhat complicated with departments, divisions, colleges. The relevant people tend not to talk to each other, and communication is a burden.

    Advice to Management

    Standardize processes across different departments.

I have been working at Oxford University full-time

    Pros

Good facilities, excellent careers service & support, vibrant city. Thoroughly enjoy working here and have benefited from the support in place for development.

    Cons

High cost of living, your experience as an employee is dependent on your PI and department. Salary is typical for the position but not ideal in an expensive city.

    Advice to Management

Further development of the community of research staff would be welcome. Proactive training to identify and mitigate mild bullying would be useful.
