    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Oxford University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you have a good supervisor, this is an amazing job. Great freedom to pursue your own ideas, the excitement of other people's great ideas, great flexibility and plenty of holiday, more than you'll get in any other job.

    Cons

You don't earn a lot as a PhD student. You know you could probably have earned more doing any other job. Also, if you have a bad supervisor, it can be hell.

    Advice to Management

Hire nice people who care about their students lives, not just their output. That's better for everyone and better for research output in the long-run.

    Cons

    Long hours
Some supervisors micromanage, others you may not see very regularly at all

I have been working at Oxford University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Access to interesting and diverse group of people, especially as an undergraduate student.

    Cons

As a DPhil student, your experience will be largely dependent on the quality of your research group/department. As such, be very careful about taking a PhD project in an area that your supervisor is moving into rather than one in which (s)he is already an expert. In the former case, it is highly likely that no effective supervision will be available. A well-equipped lab cannot compensate for a poorly prepared supervisor!

I have been working at Oxford University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some of the best facilities and funding opportunities to be found internationally. I believe it is a place where ideas can be brought to life and plenty of room for expansion is given for independent thought and innitiative.

    Cons

Some of the worst people-managers I have seen in my entire life. Managers focus solely on the academic side of things, completely disregarding growing as a person. Working till midnight is common as is working Saturdays and Sundays.

    Advice to Management

Put more systems in place to oversee and regulate the supervisor student relationships, especially when something goes wrong, as a sustainable collaboration is vital for the good outcome of every project.
