Pros

it's a good resume booster, people know PPIC and it'll open doors for you in the policy world.

Cons

* there are no pathways towards career growth in the company. * 100% white leadership team. * the company values "diversity of thought" above real diversity * professional development is non-existent

Works for equity in California, internally not so much

Pros

Highly intelligent people work there who care deeply about Californians. Many smart women occupy leadership positions. Flexible work environment. If you have a child, things are even better for you. Great physical work environment, benefits, co-workers and pay for certain positions. Paid-for skill development if you seek it out and take advantage.

Cons

Rigid managerial hierarchy with little advancement opportunity. Clear economic and racial disparities between leadership and lower-level workers. Capable, competent and oftentimes younger employees are held to different standards and held far more accountable than employees who have been there forever, do less, are not required to learn new skills and make more money. Management is complicit in the striking imbalance in workload and accountability. Toxic employees are kept on and not held accountable for their actions despite numerous complaints at the expense of capable and talented employees. Racial tokenism, no upper-level management investment in DEI principles beyond actions that look good to external stakeholders. It’s an organization that is highly antagonistic towards change.

Pros

You get to work on and learn about significant policy issues that truly matter to the state. You get to work with some very nice people who care about making state governance work better. You don't have to work very hard most of the time.

Cons

Odd pairing where they hire very talented and motivated people to do the work and then ask them to do very little. The pay is far too low for an organization in one of the world's highest cost of living cities. Career development is not a point of emphasis. Organization is very resistant to change.
