I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Excellent benefits, pay, and co-workers. Great training opportunities.

    Cons

Always in crisis management. Doing your job you discover skeletons in PG&E's closet and the company sometimes went to great lengths to keep them quiet e.g. being asked to shred records, being told to communicate via fax because emails could be traced, and being trained face-to-face by lawyers to practice being grilled. These examples were not everyday occurrences, but they happened and they belittled your soul. I left on my own terms, but I am proud to have always questioned and challenged internal management who tried to keep us quiet - I was tired of always having to push things far enough into the public eye to make a difference. I had to keep a special file of my emails notifying legal or safety of potential issues - doing my job, I was sometimes fearful about what I discovered.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Benefits: 401k match, cash pension, medical benefits FiDi location Lots of employee resource groups If you’re a parent, long parental leaves and a daycare in the building although space is limited. If you know the right people, lots of opportunities to move around and get a promotion. Big name to put on your resume. Job security- company is too big with a monopoly to fail

    Cons

Constantly on the news for all the wrong reasons Management lacks any sensitivity - CEO said in press conference that the public should be so lucky to have a refrigerator to fill when a reporter asked about food spoiled during their power outages. Hourly employees were pressured by management to not book overtime, even though there were strict deadlines to be met. Only started approving OT after too many people left and it was noticeable that people were eating their time. Backstabbing among peers - I had a peer copy and paste my detailed email to leadership. She took credit for it. This was very common. Lots and lots of cliques - “inclusion” is just HR marketing I was asked by a couple of leaders to apply for a position that would have been a promotion for me but I wasn’t interested in the role. They convinced me otherwise. They ended up hiring the other person, so that they could meet an HR rule to interview 2 people for every role. The building is a dump, something is always broken.
