"Excellent technology and market opportunity. Poor leadership and a failing culture"

I have been working at Palo Alto Networks full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Not sure why I am writing this - I guess in the hope that management listen and make changes? But its clear from past reviews they either don't listen or just don't care. It's a shame, as I love this company. Pros - The technology is amazing and the market opportunity is second to none. The technical leadership from Nir and Lee continues to give us an 18-24 month head start on any other company in our space. It really is something special. Customers love it. M&A strategy hasn't missed a beat. The sales leadership at midlevel (managers, DSM's, VP's) are usually pretty good and do the best they can to keep morale up. The presales organisation is the best in the market. It's extremely well regarded in the market - your external career opportunities will look great when you leave. As soon as you join the quality of companies headhunting you goes way up

    Cons

Exec leadership. A culture of cronyism, arrogance, politics and empire building which flows from the CEO. He hires his best friend from school into the most senior GTM role in the company who has been an absolute disaster. There is a huge disconnect between those at the top in the little clique, and pretty much everyone else. Not much communication from the top down explaining strategy and decisions. No transparency. We used to have a semi-regular "ask the CEO" call which people loved, I think Nikesh did one and then cancelled it. I guess they say its "not scalable" - Which is basically the blanket excuse for getting rid of anything that has any agility, flexibility or human touch. If you question changes, you are "the past" or "not evolving" or don't have a "growth mindset" - Yeah we get it....change can be good, it was arguably needed to take us to the next level, but that doesn't mean this is positive. Why don't you ask people what the mood of the company is beneath you. HR is broken, from an EMEA perspective anyway, but also seems to go higher. Self serving, self important and not helpful at all. The person they have brought in to lead it in EMEA is arrogant, political, and tries to tell sales leadership what to do and what is best, but with absolutely no clue of the market or even what we do as a company - spouts soundbytes without context, it's embarrassing. No-one in leadership trusts anyone in that team, which is just backwards. So much red tape being brought in. Rules for everything, not much autonomy within the business to actually make decisions. Endless process.

I worked at Palo Alto Networks full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Until the middle of 2018, was THE Company to work for! Great salary and benefits, achievable quota if you worked hard, fabulous tech and stellar reputation all backed up by knowledgeable management and a single mission.

    Cons

not sure where to start - apart from the new CEO bought in has managed to destroy the Company. Ill thought out, dodgy acquisitions, paying many multiples of true values to acquire borderline failing IT Security startups, strangely funded by the new CEO's ex employers at various finance firms leading to cronyism at the highest level.

I worked at Palo Alto Networks full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

For many years, Palo Alto Networks has been an amazing company to work at. The culture has been so unique, the people the absolutely best you could work with in the industry, and the customers, products and technology all something to be extremely proud of. It was a big thing to be part of.

    Cons

Everything changed in 2018, and in just 6 months this company fell hard, very hard, from it's place of grace. There is absolutely nothing positive left to say about working at this company. New leadership has brought along a culture of hostility, lies, verbal aggression, lack of integrity, no transparency and a heavy focus on cost cutting as the (subjectively speaking) ability to drive business growth is non-existent. There are no career progression opportunities, compensation is being cut to below market level, bonuses are being cancelled, new hirings are stalled, backfill are rarely done. People are leaving this company, fleeing to save their careers and avoid the increasingly bad reputation of the company as employer. In today's world you have the option of choosing who/what to work for. In my opinion, Palo Alto Networks should not be considered an option.

I have been working at Palo Alto Networks full-time

    Pros

Pay is competitive RSUs and ESPP make you money - Stock is performing ok Strong Security Brand In the right market space you can make good money

    Cons

Work life balance. Lots of scrutiny on employees. Plenty metrics and boxes to tick. Revenue is still heavily dependent on physical firewalls - away from physical firewalls, the security landscape is more competitive Rapidly growing security platform through acquisition - It's challenging to keep up and present the best sales message The company culture seems to be changing constantly. There's a serious Google influence with lots of ex Google hires. Sure, there are some good folks but they don't seem to represent the old PAN culture. The move to GSuite is questionable - not the best tool-set for productivity - a frequently heard comment
