    Pros

    Good training provided. Good support and progression available in the company. Lots of routes to take and they also have a dedicated start up team

    Cons

    No longer do the Research Assistant program, this was a great program for training up new CRAs. It would be good if that was brought back

    Pros

    The clients and projects are very interesting, and it is a great place to join, especially as a more junior employee - you will learn a lot.
    Being a larger CRO, there are lots of systems and quite a set way to do things - again this can be helpful to the more junior employee.

    Cons

    The salary is absolutely terrible, even by CRO standards. Considering where some of the offices are (e.g Cambridge in the UK), it is barely enough to live on for more junior roles.
    There are no discernable perks or benefits, and many of those are only available to long standing staff (e.g over 3 years), by which time most staff have left.

    Advice to Management

    There needs to be much more flexibility and a human touch from management and the HR department. I can not recommend reading Liz Ryan and a human workplace (google or see on linkedin) as this applies very strongly to the PPD working environment.

    Pros

    Opportunity for experience in many areas, good colleagues, flexibility to work from home, flexibility in working hours in the day

    Cons

    Balance in work and personal life is difficult to maintain; the pace is very fast with new systems and this is not considered in what a delivery lead has to complete in a working week.

    Advice to Management

    Reduce turnover with work and life balance and sensible integration of new systems.

    Pros

    Some of the associate directors in the finance department are very supportive and pleasant to work with. This improves their team morale, but cannot fully offset the other management issues.

    Management are talking about getting a better workload distribution for the finance department. This will help those of us that feel overwhelmed if they get the balance right.

    Cons

    There currently appears to be an unfair distribution of workloads and compensation within the finance department.

    Recent change management has been atrocious. The new system is in place (although still not fully functional 8 months after it should have gone live), so the effects of this are already starting to ease. Just don't expect as much forward planning and guidance from upper management as you might get elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

    Review pay to ensure it is in line with the current market.
    Give staff the appropriate tools and guidance to complete the tasks you ask them to do.
    Factor contracted holiday into people's workloads so that they are able to take time off without making all of the hours up in their personal time.

    Limited Scottish sites so maximum travel, slow for career progression

    Reconsider promotion scheme and regionalised monitoring

    Lack of job opportunities, Not competitive on pay

    Advice to Management

    Consider offering competitive salaries. It was very easy to leave when offered considerably more money to do same job elsewhere.

    Pros

    good company to work for. A lot of work and many studies that help you learn and improve your knowledge. they have good training scheme.

    Cons

    Salaries are not great and benifits could be better. Often you have to work late

    look after your employees. PPD has high number of people leaving

    home-based work, diversity of projects, friendly atmosphere

    Cons

    work overload, lack of upper management and strategy, major lack of medical expertise
    cost cutting at absolutely any price (including allowance covering 1 or 2 meals per day only)

    Advice to Management

    Hire expert/specialized MDs and most of all keep them !

    Pros

    Good experience of the industry.
    Granta Park is pleasant.
    Home working when requested.
    Good canteen, although many people just work thorough lunch.

    Cons

    No work life balance. Don’t expect to be doing anything else of an evening.
    A lot of unpaid overtime, do not expect any time off in lieu and probably not any thanks. No slack in the system so staff are expected to do overtime due to other staff having left, are ill or on holiday. You will earn your holiday with a lot of overtime pre and post your time off.
    Training in some departments is poor.
    Too many different systems that do not work together. Some rationalisation required.
    Difficult to get to know people even in the same building.
    Lots of people are bad tempered with each other. Usually because they have too much to do and are always stressed.
    Below inflation pay rise – most people got a 1.3% pay rise last year.
    High turnover. Most people leave because competitors are offering higher pay or due to excessive workload.

    Advice to Management

    Ensure appropriate staffing levels.
    Stop worrying about saving a few ££ on colour photocopying and give people time to actually put some continuous improvement processes in place if you really want to save money and improve service. You are overloading many people so they are only doing the urgent tasks, which is leading to mistakes and poor service, which is ultimately a false economy.

    Pros

    The bus to PPD is £1 each way leaving from the station and town

    Cons

    PPD has developed a culture which seeks to dictate rather than encourage.
    Working environment is very insolar with employees furiously tapping at their computers.
    There is a strong emphasis placed upon process and policy to the extent that common sense is abandoned and initiative is actively discouraged.
    The Management style is not conducive to employee development. Rather it is based upon top down directives which you quickly understand to conform to otherwise be ostracised.
    Management with the department i work are a tight knit group who backed one another at the general expense of their subordinates including refusing to talk to certain employees and openly lying about their performance to others.
    Poor communication generally from management and no gratitude shown for the hard work performed by employees
    Highly questionable level of integrity amongst management
    Archaic systems and multiple platforms which do not communicate to each other resulting in a high level of duplication of work
    Despite a 10% increase in EBITDA employee's payrise were 1.3%.

    Advice to Management

    Management need to re-evaluate what the role of a manager is and provide leadership courses to their current management. Currently management do not place value on the importance on being able to adapt management style to suit employees whilst recognising that all employees are different. Their management is stuck in the dark ages with no ability to relate to their employees.

    Morale need to be addressed.
