      Pros

Fun job with lots of variety and creativity

      Cons

Weekends and holidays required. Management was very negative. Nothing you do is ever good enough, and they do not celebrate your successes.

      Pros

Working with the kids was probably the best part...

      Cons

Appointments scheduled for 15 mins in which you have to photograph, edit and sell. Just unrealistic expectations

Great Training, but flawed Company Strategy

19 Nov 2012 - Store Manager in Vancouver, BC

      Pros

It was a good learning experience in retail sales, meeting sales goals, time management, and combined sales with management and dealing with customers. I was able to rise to store manager in fairly short order.

      Cons

However, in the end, the impression is that anyone not working in the corporate office is 'outside' of the company, and not to be trusted to make decisions. There is a subtle, almost 'bait and switch' strategy the company employs to attract customers with a very cheap to free '$7.99 for 31 pictures portrait deal', but the push is always for the much more expensive $300 to $500 portait / CD / framed product package. The discrepancy between customer expectation and what the store's real intentions are, became a point of contention. The store staff is the true 'frontline', where much of the friction between customers and store policy (and disgruntled employee morale) come clashing. When I thought I had learned enough, I decided the compromises in personal integrity was not worth the experience.

      Pros

*Open to be creative *Better than minimum wage starting wage *Opportunity for management experience, and, in some areas DM training *Returning families and customers *Fair business hours of operation

      Cons

*There is definitely a ceiling when it comes to wages and opportunity make commission *Unrealistic sales goals in non-peak times (Summer/Turn of the year) *Too much work expected to be done for just one (if you're lucky, two) person staff i.e.: Marketing, Aquisitions, Cold-Calls, Delivery Calls, Cleaning, Maintenance, Photography (a minimum of 4-6 appointments are expected, even if only 1-2 are booked), etc *Too many stores across brands (PictureMe, Sears, and Kiddie Kandids all owned by the same company) closed in the last year and continuing to close

Not as fun as it looks.

      Pros

My local manager was an amazingly passionate woman! If she'd have never left, neither would have I. She was the only thing that worked properly in that studio.

      Cons

They give everything away for free! Even if you do well, there is no reward. If you want to be an assistant manager, they will make you one, even if you don't deserve it or work for it. And even if you pawn your work off onto other employees. They will hire people with no qualifications at the same pay rate as a professional photographer. Upper management and regulation compromises photograph quality to get more appointments with less sales, rather than giving a superior product that people would pay hundreds of dollars for. Also, their dress code was counter productive! Infants do not see black well and it is 10 times as hard to get a baby to smile in black than in blue. If you're not working in film, there is no logical reason to wear black. Company does not understand child psychology. The manager and worked hard to make the studio profitable and within a month of us leaving the place had an awful reputation for being dirty and sending out a bad product. I am always so sad when I walk by and see all the unhappy customers... if there are any.

OK place to work as long as you work hard.

      Pros

Fun working with children, great way to learn sales skills, great discounts on portrait collections, good bonus for hitting sales goals payed each check and quarterly depending on type of bonus, constantly meeting new people and have the ability to gain loyal customers who work only with you.

      Cons

Corporate Office tends to make changes in policy right before busy season and sometimes the changes are not well communicated, different regions have different takes on the same policies so customers who travel to different studios may get different info which causes customer service issues, if you are a good worker you will have no chances for weekends off, good managers are really on-call rather than away from work so that you feel like you have no work/life balance, micro-management is the name of the game

      Non-logical

      Pros

The studios give each employee a great amount of responsibility and trust, almost immediately. Promotions come very quickly and easily.

      Cons

The company is so unorganized on the management level, they drive so many employees crazy that they quit, so the ones they have left get away with terminable actions. On the marketing level, they give EVERYTHING away for free and cheaper than the production cost in promotions and coupons, thinking that if you get them in the door they will buy more, which is true with the higher end clientele of their other divisions (Sears, Buy Buy Baby, Babies R Us, etc.) but in Walmart, it is ridiculous! It is almost impossible to keep an acceptable sales average unless it is the holidays...
