I worked at Pioneer Hybrid International

    Pros

IT department is a first class group and valued as a whole. Relaxed and laid back culture. Scrum/Agile done well. Social and career development events/programs for interns as well as events to interact with senior management. Problems were met with an open attitude towards solutions but also good software structure/infrastructure standards. Good balance of valuing new technologies without the revolving... door effect.

    Cons

There is a bit of a cultural rift between IT/research and rest of company. IT interns were spread out across buildings and floors; hard to build relationships with other interns when you're the only one in the building.

I have been working at Pioneer Hybrid International full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Smaller teams. The teams collaborate extensively and do not hoard information. Your opinion matters even if it's not the best. The team members will still listen to you and consider your ideas. Managers are always willing to work with you to help you reach your career goals. Forty hour weeks. Really good work/life balance.

    Cons

Promotions have to be approved by managers and directors that don't work with you so it can take some time to get promoted. Pay is not as competitive as other places, but is still decent

I have been working at Pioneer Hybrid International for more than a year

    Pros

Try to use latest frameworks when possible. Good people! Great benefits Good 401k matching Bonus seems to be pretty standard for an Ag company. Excellent communication from top leaders.

    Cons

    - Lack of proper career tracks in Software Engineering. - Salary differences in people with same job title but different business units (What? Why?)

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to your employees in times of change!

I have been working at Pioneer Hybrid International

    Pros

Using interesting tools to solve difficult problems at scale. Management is very understanding of work/life balance.

    Cons

Too many meetings result in too much meta-work. Some co-workers aren't quite as motivated as you would expect. Still developing rigor around best practices, transitioning out of "wild west" coding practices.

    Advice to Management

Keep encouraging best practices and pushing the value of good coding standards, don't just push for the quickest working solution every time.

I worked at Pioneer Hybrid International for less than a year

    Pros

Conveniently located outside of the city. Easy commute if you're coming from the north. I have heard the pay is better than at most other places in the Des Moines area.

    Cons

The software development process is in desperate need of refinement. Some practices that most teams stopped using a decade ago are still in use here. The choice of tech stacks is confusing given the problem domain. Suffers from "Not Invented Here" syndrome. Average competency level is low so object-oriented and functional design principles are foreign and not accepted almost as a rule. Brooks Law is in full effect... with the large number of developers working on a single project. Requirements are not well analyzed and stories are poorly planned leaving much of the load on the developer to figure it out as they implement features. Cut and Paste and Cargo Cult are the programming styles of choice. Constant changing of the guard in management.

    Advice to Management

Solicit anonymous feedback from developers to get a feel for the morale and confidence of the group. Consider looking at the development process and refining it so that it developers can easily implement well tested, high quality code. Don't just do things because you heard Facebook does it. Pioneer is not Facebook.

    Pros

Absolutely brilliant working environment for an Intern. Good tasks/projects to work on.

    Cons

Could have been more challenging at times. Sometimes less trust , just an "Intern"

    Advice to Management

Doing a good job. Thanks for the opportunity. Will definitely recommend this place for college friends

I have been working at Pioneer Hybrid International full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The company aspires to technical excellence and is willing to pay accordingly. Corporate culture is flexible and adaptive. The urge to help adjacent teams is strong.

    Cons

Due to its ag background, the company can stall talent development and career growth for entry-level positions. You must know what you need from your position and demand that your management meet your needs. There is no formal mentoring program in place.

I have been working at Pioneer Hybrid International full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of talented people. Interesting subject matter. Management recognizes and rewards talent. Coworkers genuinely care about you - joining Pioneer is like joining a big family. Less than 40 hour weeks.

    Cons

Typical corporate nonsense. Bureaucracy. Internal-only departments put very little emphasis on end user experience.

    Advice to Management

Streamline interaction between the infrastructure and development teams. Slow/unhelpful infrastructure support cripples innovations, speed of development, and developer morale.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Pioneer Hybrid International full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

There are some really good people working here. You can have opportunities to use a number of different development technology stacks.

    Cons

DuPont has slowly transformed Pioneer into less than what it was. For instance changed insurance to all east coast providers which are not all accepted in the Midwest. This leads to excessive paperwork and less benefits. Neither my Dentist or Eye doctor accept those insurance policies. Pioneer was always a big company with a small feel and everyone knew your name. But now it feels more like a hog confinement,... people just jammed into cubes and you hardly know anyone.

    Advice to Management

Need to do something about advancement within the company. Very few opportunities open up within ones area.
