I worked at Pioneer full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The teams I worked with were fantastic. Very smart people and I learned a ton during my time there. People with great ideas and wanted to make a difference. It was an exciting place to work with all the advancements happening and the merging of biology with information technologies.

    Cons

Constant threats of layoffs looming over our heads made it difficult to be excited about coming to work. Meetings with upper management seemed to be canned talking points instead of answering questions that matter to employees. In the several years I was there surrounding the merger with Dow and change to Corteva, there was a definite slide from a company who truly valued their employees, to a company who was more concerned about pinching pennies. It really took a toll on team morale.

    I worked at Pioneer

    Pros

IT department is a first class group and valued as a whole. Relaxed and laid back culture. Scrum/Agile done well. Social and career development events/programs for interns as well as events to interact with senior management. Problems were met with an open attitude towards solutions but also good software structure/infrastructure standards. Good balance of valuing new technologies without the revolving door effect.

    Cons

There is a bit of a cultural rift between IT/research and rest of company. IT interns were spread out across buildings and floors; hard to build relationships with other interns when you're the only one in the building.

I have been working at Pioneer full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Smaller teams. The teams collaborate extensively and do not hoard information. Your opinion matters even if it's not the best. The team members will still listen to you and consider your ideas. Managers are always willing to work with you to help you reach your career goals. Forty hour weeks. Really good work/life balance.

    Cons

Promotions have to be approved by managers and directors that don't work with you so it can take some time to get promoted. Pay is not as competitive as other places, but is still decent

I have been working at Pioneer for more than a year

    Pros

Try to use latest frameworks when possible. Good people! Great benefits Good 401k matching Bonus seems to be pretty standard for an Ag company. Excellent communication from top leaders.

    Cons

    - Lack of proper career tracks in Software Engineering. - Salary differences in people with same job title but different business units (What? Why?)

I have been working at Pioneer

    Pros

Using interesting tools to solve difficult problems at scale. Management is very understanding of work/life balance.

    Cons

Too many meetings result in too much meta-work. Some co-workers aren't quite as motivated as you would expect. Still developing rigor around best practices, transitioning out of "wild west" coding practices.

I worked at Pioneer for less than a year

    Pros

Conveniently located outside of the city. Easy commute if you're coming from the north. I have heard the pay is better than at most other places in the Des Moines area.

    Cons

The software development process is in desperate need of refinement. Some practices that most teams stopped using a decade ago are still in use here. The choice of tech stacks is confusing given the problem domain. Suffers from "Not Invented Here" syndrome. Average competency level is low so object-oriented and functional design principles are foreign and not accepted almost as a rule. Brooks Law is in full effect with the large number of developers working on a single project. Requirements are not well analyzed and stories are poorly planned leaving much of the load on the developer to figure it out as they implement features. Cut and Paste and Cargo Cult are the programming styles of choice. Constant changing of the guard in management.

Absolutely brilliant working environment for an Intern. Good tasks/projects to work on.

    Cons

Could have been more challenging at times. Sometimes less trust , just an "Intern"
