I have been working at Queen Mary, University of London full-time

    Pros

Great benefits including flexible working, large amount of holiday, good pension.
Vibrant campus with people from all walks of life interacting together.
Very easily accessible - great location

    Cons

Can be slightly bureaucratic - require input from grade 5+ to get anything done quickly.
Infrastructure needs a lot of work, to bring it up to the standard of a usual Russell Group University.

    Advice to Management

Planning is required prior to moving ahead with projects (particularly building projects) to help save the University time and effort fixing things that should have already of been accounted for.

I worked at Queen Mary, University of London full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Generous annual leave and excellent for work/life balance

    Cons

There is no plan or care for staff's career path. You are very much kept doing your same job for the foreseeable future. There is currently no incentive to do better. Other HE sector organisations every few years switch their staff jobs in order to gain other experience and not to make their job tedious. This does not happen here. As well other organisations devise career plans for the most capable staff, but again this does not happen here. Departments work in isolation and they are not communicating, it is very disjointed. Staff do not feel to be appreciated and mostly feel disregarded and given for granted. Finally, there is no clear direction from management as to what the strategy means for the individuals and how they fit into the bigger picture. There are some big communications but this is not enough to make staff feel part of a project.

    Advice to Management

My advice is to start engaging with staff at every level, to try and select capable staff into career paths. Nurturing capable staff to be the next manager through a plan. There is currently no incentive for staff to do their best. Not to give staff for granted. Give the opportunity to staff to switch jobs every few years (even at the same grade) in order for them to grow and make new valuable experience.
