Pros

-You will likely meet a few great people here that will be lifelong friends -Some employees have a serious passion for the industry which is inspiring -You will work for a company with a great reputation in this industry -Some of the managers/group leaders are fantastic engineers and great teachers -The pay is mediocre, but the benefits are okay -Even though there are cons associated with working at RDH, it feels like RDH is trying hard to make the company and work-place better

Cons

-The training of their new employees is incredibly inconsistent. I believe they are working on this now, but this is something to ask about in your interview. -There is almost no work-life-balance. RDH may say that they strive for work life balance, but this is not accurate. I still know people working there that say it has only gotten worse. Many people work 10+hrs a day on a regular basis, and even work on weekends. If you ask your manager to help reduce your workload, little will be done, and they will just toss one of RDH's core values at you in response like "do what it takes". Essentially, be prepared to not come home for many dinners because you will be sitting at your desk writing reports into the evening. -The office environment can often be depressing and negative. Most of the conversations in the office are either about how poorly their projects are going, how awful most contractors are, how overworked they are, how late they had to work the night before... the list goes on. Essentially, there is little to no positivity. -RDH does not contract out window testing, and makes the engineers do this. But this is why you got an engineering degree, right? ;). Essentially, just be prepare to be on site a few times a month up to a couple times a week testing windows. This can be very exhausting both mentally and physically. And be prepared to work beyond 8hrs nearly every time you go out on site for testing. -Each manager has slightly different rules which will impact your entire experience at RDH. For example, one manager will allow you to work late one day, and leave early the next day to compensate (if your workload allows this which is rare, but nice when you have the odd slow day). However, another manager will require that you work a minimum of 8 hours a day no matter what. The biggest issue here is just that they are inconsistent. -Like all consulting firms, there is a high level of pressure to fill your timesheet with nearly 100% billable hours. I get it from a financial perspective, but it would be nice to have some flexibility here once in a while. -The company culture is very different from one office to the next - you might flourish in one office, but burn out and hate your job in another office. This is a well known fact within RDH. -It is hard to move around within RDH and try new things - people can get pigeon holed into a specific area. Overall, I would say that working for RDH is very hard. Nothing will be sugar coated. It is not for someone who thinks building science might be 'kind of interesting' or 'fun'. This is for the die-hard building science fan that wants to devote their life to the industry. Be prepared to work long and hard hours and have nothing else in life to talk about except for waterproofing and how many hours of overtime you worked last week.

Pros

Beer on Friday's, free coffee, great co-workers (only those under the age of 50), public transit coverage, MSP coverage (BC).

Cons

I didn't realize how rampant sexual harassment is in the workplace in this day and age until I spent 2 years working at RDH. Everyday I felt like I was in a bad episode of "Mad Men". I had men rub my shoulders, tell me to make them coffee (that wasn't part of my job description) and frequently heard men talking about the physical appearance of women in the office. The female staff across all departments and at all levels were treated very poorly and with little respect in the Vancouver office. Support staff and reception frequently had work dumped on them at the eleventh hour by people who thought that they were their assistants (they weren't) and female PM's, senior engineers and managers constantly had to pick up the slack and take on extra projects/committees for the lazy men in the office who always seemed to always be "busy" but never really got anything done. This place is full of dudes who have no idea how to manage their time after 20+ years in the industry, and need a "Mommy" to figure it out for them. There was a mass exodus of women at all levels in the office at this time because of this attitude.

RDH is committed to maintaining and promoting a work environment where all employees are treated with respect and dignity and as such our policy for handling concerning allegations such as yours are clearly documented in our Employment Manual. RDH takes allegations of all forms of harassment very seriously and complies with the requirements of the Human Rights Code and Federal and Provincial/State laws and policies. Additionally, we have a Gender Working Group with objectives such as facilitating the creation of a support network with both formal and informal avenues for resolution of issues as they arise. The group also works to raise awareness around conscious and subconscious gender biases along with other similar objectives. Pros

Coworkers in staff engineering and support positions are great- nearly everyone is very professional, intelligent (both intellectually and emotionally), and eager to perform well. Option to purchase equity shares (~10-15% of annual salary) after approximately 6 months (if you negotiate) or a year (standard). Vancouver and Waterloo offices have renowned industry experts and working there provides fantastic learning opportunities for young engineers. Close ties with universities make it an easy transition for new graduates and can provide great career advancement opportunities. Three weeks of vacation to start is much better than other firms in similar markets.

Cons

Each office has a very different culture. When the company expands into a new regional market, there is a tendency to hire partner-level employees from other firms. Some of these have been fantastic hires, while others have ended up backfiring significantly- there are a few washouts or lazy/ terminal middle management types that clearly came from larger firms looking for an easier opportunity to advance. Some managers regularly engage in illegal employment practices apparently without repercussion, including: 1.) asking interview candidates if they plan on getting married or having children in the near future, 2.) formally reprimanding employees for publicly discussing the salary/benefits offered at other firms, threatening punitive action if it is done again, and canceling salary/ benefit discussions as a direct consequence, and a number of other far more severe examples that will remain unmentioned. A lot of other corners are cut in order to offer equity shares to all employees. If you are working in one of the US offices and don't have the luxury of being able to use your spouse's benefits, you will be in a very tough spot. The benefits package isn't even close to being competitive to what other firms are offering, and I can't imagine what is offered is remotely reliable for employees that depend on their employer-provided medical care. Extremely minimal 401k match (3% with no contribution). This is an improvement over what it used to be (nothing) but not competitive with other firms. Flat salary without bonuses; it ends up being average to slightly below average for the industry. Depending on who you work for, your pay curve may be a little more dependent on personality than the volume or quality of your work- this could work in your favor if you approach it right. Managers tend to easily buy into hype and word travels quickly- so if you start off on the right foot you can be in a good position.

Integrity is one of our core values and we will not stand for illegal practices. That said, your insight tells me that further training is needed for hiring managers. I’m sorry that our compensation efforts are not meeting your expectations. RDH actually contributes 3% of salary for every eligible employee without the need for the staff member to contribute a matching portion. The employee is 100% vested. I appreciate you taking the time to share your areas for improvement so that I can reflect on how we can adapt and ensure all staff feel valued, appreciated and are working at their full potential.
