Incredibly Negative Experience

Pros

Fulfilling work with nonprofit clients for good causes all over the world.

Cons

Supervisors and managers do not receive any management training and are unqualified to manage other employees. Onboarding process is minimal at best. This is not a family friendly company. Paternity leave is not offered and maternity leave is almost non-existent. One employee who manages two others, on multiple occasions, admitted to me that she set up her own direct reports for failure in attempt to force them out of the company because they were “unliked.” Innovation is incredibly slow and not well communicated to the rest of the company. HR has turned a blind eye to several complaints from different people of one employee’s inexcusable behavior towards others. That employee is still employed there and often celebrated because of their work, in spite of all these complaints. As you can imagine, the turnover rate is incredibly high at this company. In my time there I saw more than 8 people leave or be fired from RKD group. Expect to be called and texted by bosses and supervisors at any time, day or night, business hours or not.

Pros

- You get a lot of experience working on many clients. Staying at least a year or two will help build your resume. - There is SOME career growth, only if those roles open up. For example, if you start as a Coordinator in a client-facing or Media role, the next step up is Senior Coordinator, then Associate or Associate Manager (title naming depends on the department), then Manager. If a Manager role does not open up, then you can’t get that role. If a Supervisor role does not open up, then you can’t get that role. - The health insurance is pretty decent. For the former PPO plan I had signed up for, my copayment was $35 for doctor’s appointments. - You are helping out nonprofits! - The Marketing & Sales Department hosts fun events occasionally. Recently, due to the pandemic, we’ve had virtual trivia events and those were definitely fun. Winners and runner-ups won some prizes. - Depending on which department you are a part of, your immediate team members could be one of the best people to work with. I loved working with my immediate team and together, we grew professionally and personally.

Cons

- Work/life balance is BAD during the final quarter of each year. Unfortunately, that is the reality of working with ONLY nonprofit clients. You can’t just take all of Thanksgiving week or Christmas week off because there is too much work to be done. If your team is understaffed, you’re stuck working at a time when you’d rather travel or just visit family. - C-Suite executives took too long to make a decision on the remote/work-from-home policy. - C-Suite executives are not transparent about the state of the company's success (or failures). We were told last year that the company was doing ok, but after seeing all the layoffs in the past months, it is clear that executives have not been completely honest with us. - Many departments are UNDERSTAFFED and this injustice is not fair to employees and not fair to clients. C-Suite executives over-promise clients and under-staff employees. - Leadership is NOT EMPATHETIC towards its employees of color. In light of #BlackLivesMatters and #StopAsianHate, there has been no public stance taken on those social matters from the CEO. - I have seen TOO MANY POC employees leave the company or be laid off in the past few years. Considering that the diversity of employees is very little to begin with, the turnover rate for POC employees compared to white employees is very, very HIGH. This is an unhealthy pattern that is not addressed at all. - For the longest time, I’ve noticed a lot of employees, who are not the best at their jobs, get promoted. The company does give out a lot of “trophy” promotions. - There are too many directors, senior directors, senior executives, etc. and not enough coordinators and associates: the people who are ACTUALLY carrying out the work for clients. - The company spent way too much money on useless swag. Employees don’t need an excessive amount of company-branded lip balm, or baseball caps, or socks.

Pros

The creative team at RKD is strong, committed and very talented. However, they have lacked a leader who knows how to foster their talents and provide a clear growth path. And the seasoned creative team often needs to fill the strategic gap left by inexperienced, risk-adverse client services team members.

Cons

This company is owned by a venture capital group who are implementing a growth-by-acquisition strategy that has a gross billings amount goal. Since venture capital firms are not altruistic, they will obviously be looking to sell the entity at some future date in order to generate a profit from their significant investment. This tends to make the future uncertain for all but the very top of the company food chain, regardless of the rhetoric stating otherwise spouted by senior management. Additionally, purchasing and merging companies comes with it's own set of issues, including job duplication, cultural disconnects and process rifts. The uncertainty, poor management and heavily board-driven oversight and direction of this company serves to foster low morale among most of the employees, particularly those who are not in management positions.
