I worked at Rail Gourmet full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Free tea and coffee and a staff discount (although we use to get free staff issue of any stock in the service centre)

    Cons

Poor management, huge staff turnover, poor wages, treated like a number rather then a person, all they've bothered about is how much money they can make, poor staff training and people skills, instead of taking responsibility management shift the blame onto you, no official breaks expected to work non stop for 8 hours (although you do get some quite periods) full of two faced back stabbers.

I have been working at Rail Gourmet full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work on own initiative, socialising with passengers little input from management however sometimes this can be a bad thing as some employees abuse this

    Cons

Charged for missing stock so actually getting paid below minimum wage. Poor staff morale and no reward or recognition for working hard. Only paid 20 minutes before strain leaves when it takes 40 minutes to check trolley and replenish stock plus arrive at train 10 minutes prior to departure

I have been working at Rail Gourmet full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Its not so stressful any more if you don't take this job very serious and stop worrying about targets. Read your book or study between stations/ trips

    Cons

If you would like to travel with train on what are you daily working on don't forget to buy a ticket.. Early shift/ late shift.. The hardest are earlies when you need 3 days to finally not being sleepy, but then rota changes for late shift. Uniform - hot in the summer, cold in the winter High targets. if you reach them you get bonuses to your salary (monthly about $30) No official lunch breaks Stupid rules about when you can and cant take holidays/ swap shifts with others.. You are not allowed to leave your trolley unattended at any times.. so for a lunch you can have 1 item from trolley it can be crisps/chocolate/cookie/sweets.. if they dont like you they can fire you for leaving your trolley while you are buying your lunch at the station because you are not allowed to carry your food inside the trolley.. Saturdays/Sundays off once in the month or two, because they have favourites who can get desired days No career opportunities Join RMT to be protected only $4 a month

    Pros

Good salary, job was easy, great people to work with , get to travel , good staff perks, good amount of holidays

    Cons

Shift patterns were inconsistent as you would be switching from early shifts- 5am start one week then next week 2pm start.

    On Board Host

I have been working at Rail Gourmet

    Pros

A travel pass is provided on some routes, we get an allowance of tea, coffee and water and a sandwich and crisps as part of a food allowance. There is a points reward system called celebrate which recognises achievement. Staff are able to join a pension scheme following a qualifying period. Occupational health referrals if required.

    Cons

It is quite hard unless you are on set hours or office based to have a good work/life balance as due to the nature of the jobs the shifts are very varied and sometimes are changed at quite short notice. Morale can appear low at times amongst staff and of course staff would like a pay rise The job can be a bit stressful at times especially during times of train disruption. it appears to be quite hard to gain career progression.
