I have been working at Renishaw full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Graduate scheme gives graduates good exposure to different parts of the company. Wide product range for varied work. The company has lots of internal training courses to develop the skills of new starters, and lots of support for apprentices, graduates and placements.

    Cons

Later career progression potential is unclear, and it looks like the really big paychecks go only to (very) senior management, not to the principal engineers.

    Advice to Management

    More transparency regarding career progression.

I have been working at Renishaw full-time

    Pros

Stable business built on innovation, with many roles working on interesting and challenging technical problems. Dominant workplace culture has very little micromanagement. Lots of opportunity for personal growth, rewards independent problem-solving. Relaxed workplace atmosphere, mostly in scenic locations. Very responsive to employee wellbeing, great flexible annual-leave policies.

    Cons

While promoting innovation, this is within the bounds of the naturally very-pessimistic manufacturing industry which is resistant to change. Many risk-averse entrenched personalities only aim for incremental innovation, and to build customer goodwill by simply meeting their short-term needs and requests. Rather the opposite of the initial innovative disruption McMurtry founded the company upon. This restricts the... opportunity for individual contribution and disruptive innovation. Engineers and technical staff have a large disconnect from customers and their needs, with problems only reaching them after percolating down the heirarchy chain. Therefore many staff only personally innovate over a very small slice of the pie, with no chance to think big. Only upper management ever sees the full picture, and all attribution for success falls there. This has created and continues to fuel a culture of seniority-based promotion, further reducing the opportunity for hard-work based merit and individual contribution.

    Advice to Management

The organisation would greatly benefit from improving communication vertically within divisions, between all employees and management, diversifying knowledge of customer problems and industry trends. Lack of direction provides little opportunity for big-picture thinking and innovation/contribution amongst individual employees, especially junior members. Change the culture of seniority-based promotion. This... actively demotivates the best and brightest, increases employee turnover and promotes mediocrity.

I have been working at Renishaw full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Safe...ish but boring with little expectation.

    Cons

Clicky, nepetisim, little real opportunity and managers who don't understand the job of their reportees and who merely add bureaucracy

    Advice to Management

Employ 'experienced competent practitioners' able to build / command respect via their support in such roles not yes men contributing little .... or typically worse. Get REAL control of the juggernaut and listen to the views of knowledgable employees.
