      Pros

It offers a lot of incentives to staff like gift cards that motivates them to make as many sales as possible.

      Cons

The uniform allowance unfortunately does not stretch far enough when you are doing overtime.

      Well...

      Pros

Free uniform allowance up to a certain amount, generous staff discount.

      Cons

A very cliquey atmosphere surrounding management and staff. When management leave they are usually not replaced unless absolutely necessary. The role of a manager will usually be given to a level 3 sales assistant in order to cut costs. Management purposefully hides information about opportunities such as level-3 to management roles in other stores in order to maintain their store staff and reduce retraining and rehiring. Most sales floor staff are young and at university and college. This usually means treatment by management can be undermining and very school-like even if you're more senior. Engagement with sales assistants from high ups during visits such as the area manager, regional manager, the CEO, and the founder usually never happen. The Area Manager will quiz you on protocols and service skills, but these are never just refreshing conservations as management will drill into you that you can't mess up these situations. This creates a lot of stress and usually, most visits are stressful. I would have liked the opportunity to have some sort of conversation or witness others engage with these individuals in a more productive manner. I did not feel seen, heard, or recognized by these people. Because you're on the lowest end of the payroll, you do feel easily replace and that you don't matter. You also have to deal with a lot of emotionally immature people, be that staff or customers. Working here will most definitely affect your mental health. The company is trying to change that, but sometimes a leaflet and a poster in a toilet do not seem that engaging or helpful.

      "Perks" aren't really perks

      Pros

Staff discount of 40%- doesn't apply to sale or any other brands and is capped at £250 of full price clothes a month. Uniform allowance of £65 (per 8 hour weekly contract) or £105 (per 20 hour weekly contract) every 3 months- this is only enough to buy 1 pair of jeans/trousers and one top a month, can't be used on any sale or promotional items, accessories, shoes or bags. You are required to wear in-season River Island (head to toe) every shift, so you have to spend a substantial amount on RI clothes regularly. Lots of extra hours available around Christmas, regardless of whether you want them or not you have to work them. Pay is above minimum wage (because stores are kept understaffed whilst you have to work at max efficiency)

      Cons

Hard to get time off if you are not a level 2/management. No overtime. Rotas constantly appear on a Saturday evening for Sunday. Very demanding job role. Rotas are final, shift swapping is rarely approved and you must find your own cover before phoning in sick (at least 2 hours in advance of shift). A lot of physical work involved on delivery days- shifting large totes of stock. Management usually reluctant to interact with low level employees, particularly about time off, holiday pay, shift swaps, etc. Shifts tend to be 4 hours long to avoid giving staff breaks (breaks are unpaid anyway). Staff room has lockers (most staff share a locker with 1 other and management have access to all lockers), a small fridge and a kettle- no cutlery, crockery or even tea/coffee. You need management permission to use the toilet, so if other staff or busy or manager is with someone else, you must wait until they approve it.
