I have been working at River Island Clothing part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Free uniform allowance up to a certain amount, generous staff discount.

    Cons

A very cliquey atmosphere surrounding management and staff. When management leave they are usually not replaced unless absolutely necessary. The role of a manager will usually be given to a level 3 sales assistant in order to cut costs. Management purposefully hides information about opportunities such as level-3 to management roles in other stores in order to maintain their store staff and reduce retraining and rehiring. Most sales floor staff are young and at university and college. This usually means treatment by management can be undermining and very school-like even if you're more senior. Engagement with sales assistants from high ups during visits such as the area manager, regional manager, the CEO, and the founder usually never happen. The Area Manager will quiz you on protocols and service skills, but these are never just refreshing conservations as management will drill into you that you can't mess up these situations. This creates a lot of stress and usually, most visits are stressful. I would have liked the opportunity to have some sort of conversation or witness others engage with these individuals in a more productive manner. I did not feel seen, heard, or recognized by these people. Because you're on the lowest end of the payroll, you do feel easily replace and that you don't matter. You also have to deal with a lot of emotionally immature people, be that staff or customers. Working here will most definitely affect your mental health. The company is trying to change that, but sometimes a leaflet and a poster in a toilet do not seem that engaging or helpful.
