I have been working at Royal Mail part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You are well paid for what you do.

    Cons

Work load is too heavy on some rounds and impossible to complete in your contracted hours yet on other rounds it’s too light and people finish work at least an hour early every day. Unless you’ve got donkeys years of service, you will always end up working the heavy rounds. Managers try to bully you into working overtime to complete the round even when you have told them you will not work over your contracted hours. If you are off sick managers seem to think that they know better than your doctor! Contracts are now all part time for new starters. You will be told at interview that you will be made full time very quickly, this is a lie. There is a two tier workforce, part timers are treated like dirt by the company and also by many of the old timers who are on full time contracts. It’s almost impossible to get holidays when you want them. Unlike most employers who offer holidays based on first come first served, RM allocate holidays based on length of service and the old timers get to pick what they want while the newer staff have to just take the crumbs of what’s left.

I have been working at Royal Mail part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    keep fit, out in outdoors

    Cons

no support, no training, no advice, some unfriendly, miserable colleagues, no communication, ( managemtn will not inform you about anything, even how to book holidays or anything to do with job) no teamwork, chaotic management, hardly any overtime, Can be really busy such as currently so cant finish round within 5 hours you get paid. Out in winter in pouring rain cold in the dark, spring summer fantastic. Got 2 days training which was basically going out with somebody on thier round and given a few streets to do! Absolutely zero training. ZERO SUPPORT, ZERO INFORMATION. If part time will get paid 5 hours, much less than full timers who have 8 hours or more to get mail prepared and do round in adequate time. Little chance of overtime.

I have been working at Royal Mail part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great pay, Great banter, Become part of the family, Get to know locals and customers like friends.

    Cons

Part Time contract needs to be scrapped, Not fair how part timers get treated compared to full timers. If candidate A who picks up all the overtime is treated worse than Candidate B who is full time contract as been with the company 10 years. Why cant we all be treated the same? On same contract and same hours. When part timers go on holiday they are only getting paid 25 hours basic?? When there really working 35 to 40 hours per week on overtime.

I have been working at Royal Mail part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Plenty of overtime, however I only applied for a part time position

    Cons

You don't finish your day until your run is complete, making it difficult just to work part time if that's why you applied

    "Postman with Driving"

    3.0
Current Employee - Postman/Woman With Driving

I have been working at Royal Mail part-time

    Pros

Good co-workers. Plenty of overtime. Good hourly pay.

    Cons

Given your annual leave by management - told to find other employees to swap with if you need a certain week off. Very difficult and frustrating process as most don't want to swap their annual leave. As a part-time employee you don't get given your own specific route to walk each day - you're put on walks that need covering so it can be hard to be up to speed with your partner who has usually done the walk for several years. A lot more hectic than you would imagine.

I have been working at Royal Mail part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Finish usually before 3 Still good hour rate, for non skilled job

    Cons

Part time contract Never know for 100% what time you are going to finish Lack of toilets on the walk, as a result not drinking enough Some managers are not the best Not paying overtime on time No chance for own walk No chance for full time employment

I have been working at Royal Mail part-time

    Pros

Early finishes Full sick pay (after 1 years service) Good hourly rate

    Cons

Don't believe what they say in interviews regarding full time hours. There are none available, people wait up to 10 years for it. Although the hourly rate is good, the part time wage is not enough to live on. I'm on 30 hours which is the most a part timer can get and I struggle every week. Overtime is scarce as the company - like many is making cut backs for more profit. Working Saturdays is frustrating Holiday system is confusing and out of date.
