Thanks so much for your review. We have to agree with you on both points; the people at SGN are truly great to work with and our IT infrastructure needs to be improved. You’ll be pleased to hear that we’re doing something about this and we’ve just embarked on an ambitious project ...

    Pros

The people are great, in many places there's a strong family feel, and people want to deliver the best customer experience. Community involvement is high on the agenda - the CAP scheme allows everyone to spend one day each year working together to make a difference for our local communities. Some of our leaders genuinely embrace it. There's also a matched giving fund too. Recognition is done well. The SGNWay awards recognise...

    Cons

Not so good is IT but a Cloud and O365 migration should help. Poor network speeds and lack of good wifi across sites. Some managers’ people skills are limited. HR processes are frustrating but things are improving in this area.

    Advice to Management

Be open minded to a different way of doing things, and try a few of them. Modernise the areas that need it, it’s 2017. Trust your people and have adult conversations. Communicate more from the top on strategic direction and company performance.

Thanks for sharing your experience of working for SGN. It’s great to hear positivity about many of the areas we do well. Like many companies, IT can be challenging but our O365 and Cloud migration project should modernise how we work. With respect to network speeds and wifi, we’re ...

I have been working at SGN full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Salary - fair and annual inflationary increases each year, including an annual lump sum pay award. Plus a pay grade scheme based on merit which means you have the ability to earn more with experience. Good opportunities for progression and development compared to previous employers. Good benefits - generous maternity pay, cycle2work scheme, childcare vouchers, great online portal for retail discounts, pension & death...

    Cons

Like probably all big companies there can be some elements of teams working in silos. The company can be a little old fashioned regarding things like part time working and I wasn't able to secure this when I needed to (however my managers were supportive in other ways like giving me a phased return to full time, however this didn't suit my personal situation). The senior management is lacking a bit in diversity, however...

    Advice to Management

Ultimately I've taken the decision to leave SGN due to personal reasons - but I would recommend the company as an employer to others. No company is perfect but SGN are working hard on the areas where change is needed. My main advice would be to look at a more modern approach to flexible/part-time working, working from home and to avoiding travel for unnecessary face to face meetings. But also - keep up the good work!

I have been working at SGN full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Have worked for SGN for over 11 years. Love my job, the company does recognize hard work and opportunities are there if you are prepared to work for them. Diverse company (perhaps apart from the exec) and great people, the definition of team work should have a picture of my department next to the words, especially during the unexpected. The company does much work to engage its employees and has a range of benefits...

    Cons

Long, long hours, 12+hrs (unpaid) is normal in the winter, and it's necessary to answer emails at home to keep on top of the workload. Still a number (though thankfully getting less each year) of old "dinosaurs" within the company - who prefer to command and tell rather than explain the whys. Entry level wages for Range 2 no longer competitive and make the recruitment, selection and retention difficult.

    Advice to Management

Carry on doing what you are doing - bringing in external people in to senior positions recently is a positive move and is already bringing a fresh perspective. Consider revising certain range 2 salaries, or reclassifying job ranges for some.

I have been working at SGN full-time

    Pros

People: People are great, they make you feel welcome when you join. You'll come across the odd grumpy boots but that's normal in every company. SGN's employees are also diverse which is great- it's just a shame this isn't reflected in the managers (see below). Engagement with employees: There's an app which has competitions to win hotel stays, various gadgets and concert tickets. Rewards for employees: There's...

    Cons

Problems with diversity in senior roles e.g 95% of managers are middle-aged men. Nepotism - Managers giving their family members jobs at SGN that they are neither qualified nor experienced for. HR isn't bothered by this and allows this to happen frequently- it looks like its easier to do this, than to interview external qualified candidates. Skills gap- You'll come across some people who can barely use a computer...

    Advice to Management

You have great internal development programmes, why don't you encourage more diverse employees to join them? Stop allowing managers to hire their own family members who have no qualifications or experience for the role. There are plenty of people externally who have worked really hard to get qualifications and experience and are being turned away. HR needs to amend their recruitment procedures and ensure all new...
