I have been working at SSE full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good opportunities are available for the correct people. Promotes a positive safety culture. Lead well by CEO so relatively stable place for employment.

    Cons

Can be quite archaic at times as most of the senior managers are long term and stuck to the way they know.

    Advice to Management

If we focussed on quality as much as safety, we would eradicate the safety issues at source. Also, listen to new ideas

I have been working at SSE full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Not many that you can't find else where

    Cons

Dinosaur of a company. Ran like a sweat shop. Old Boys club. Bullying culture if you dare to challenge. Out dated IT. No new ideas. Unbelievable chum rate of employees especially in their home services business. 50% of engineers have had to be replaced in the last 2 years though them leaving! Safety culture is extreme. But only if it won't actually cost money. Poor tools and equipment. Cheap vans not fit for purpose. Work life balance is a joke. Un competitive pay. Instead of giving the chief executive a 72% pay deal. Give your staff a decent rise.

    Advice to Management

Stop assuming management know best. Listen to what your front line staff are saying. Especially those with many years experience in the industry. Invest in the right areas. Give your engineers the rights tools to do the job. Instead of letting middle managers make their own little kingdom look good by cutting costs instead of making money. Look to see how to get the best from your staff rather then bullying them into working too hard for too long. Your home services buiness has stood still for 10 years! With less customers and engineers now then 10 years ago! Wake up an smell the coffee before its too late!

I have been working at SSE full-time

    Pros

    Pay and holidays are decent

    Cons

Management are useless, if your face doesn't fit you may as well look for a new job. Bullying coaches, managers with no metering experience, the list of cons is endless. Even the engineers backstab each other just to look good. RTEs that get an idea in their head and think that is right even when it's wrong.

    Advice to Management

Stop giving people jobs just because his mate likes him.

I have been working at SSE full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are some good people working there who are very supportive and just want to go a good job. Benefits are ok but other companies offer similar.

    Cons

My office (Portsmouth) is very overcrowded, the management just seem to keep adding new desks. This means it's hard to park, find a free toilet, huge queues in the canteen, and the Air con cant cope in the summer. The whole company has a bullying culture where if you don't make their targets you get a poor performance report. Some of the targets are impossible. It still has an "Old Boy Network" where if your face fits you'll do well in the company.

    Advice to Management

Take time to look at the staff you have. There are many of us that just want to do a good job! Stop the blame culture, and invest in the Penner road building. You need to add more facilities and less desks!

    sharesave and some great colleagues

    Cons

    management, nepotism and bullying

    Advice to Management

focus on your long term staff and employ some decent managers based on their merit rather than the ability to lick their superiors cracks

    Pros

    Pension. Good salary. Death benefits

    Cons

Poor management. Lack of career opportunities. All work is dominated by cost. Safety is always secondary. Very poor expenses for traveling. Management don't listen and have no respect with journeymen who have done the job for years.

    Advice to Management

Audit your managers who are focused on profit. We will end up in court with the shortcut s we are taking. There is a class structure which divides the office workers and engineers.

    Pros

Good salary. No real pressure. Colleagues are all decent and help is there when needed. Bonus available on all field quotes.

    Cons

Travel time is poor compared to previous companies. I was told in the interview all work would be local but this has not really been the case. Apart from this I have no other real complaints.

I worked at SSE full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Employees can own shares.

The company offers support to sick employees.

    Cons

Horrible teams. Bullying and gender discrimination is encouraged.

    Rude and grumpy team mates.

Most staff are not well educated...hence making changes can be very difficult.

Stress levels in employees increasing due to horrible blame culture within the company.

    Advice to Management

Change old staff with history of bad working relationships.
Improve your trust in women who take up technical roles.

    Pros

Very enjoyble work environment. Opportunities for those who want them and work for them, regardless of qualifications or background. Potential job for life. Senior management see employees as their most valuable asset and treat them as such. Sharesaves and SIPS a fantastic benefit. Seen by outsiders as a "great place to work". Proud to tell people I work for Scottish and Southern Energy.

    Cons

A bit too much red tape in areas when you just want to get something done, although they are addressing this and other issues in staff workshops.

    Advice to Management

Never forget how important the staff are to the business.
