I have been working at SSE full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Has the framework to support employees. Good set of polices pay and perks. Is really diverse and looks to be sustainable

    Cons

There appears to be some real issues in some areas. Networks appears to have a lack of direction and lots of dead wood. There are lots of people in positions that haven't been gained on merit and with all the recent changes more and more of the wrong type of people are being promoted in to high level positions. This will undoubtedly end in disaster. These people are not good for the company and are damaging moral and processes and appear to do anything to keep their positions.

    Advice to Management

Start thinking for yourselves and really look at how you want things to work before you start making changes. Also if you want the workers to follow you need to provide leaders with integrity. We will not follow morons and can spot liars we are not stupid. And finally, you can send them on all the leadership courses you want but it won't make them good leaders

    I worked at SSE full-time

    Pros

Friendly, supportive colleagues. Good security and safety culture which takes a little getting used to but is taken seriously by management in all departments. Environmentally aware (lift sharing encouraged, solar cells on Havant offices). Opportunities to see other bits of the business.

    Cons

Can take a while to get things done which can be frustrating for goal-focused individuals. A lot of bureaucratic paper-based processes.

    Advice to Management

Streamline paper-based process and procedures to reduce bureaucracy and make workflow more efficient; shorten decision making processes and timescales.

I have been working at SSE full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good opportunities are available for the correct people. Promotes a positive safety culture. Lead well by CEO so relatively stable place for employment.

    Cons

Can be quite archaic at times as most of the senior managers are long term and stuck to the way they know.

    Advice to Management

If we focussed on quality as much as safety, we would eradicate the safety issues at source. Also, listen to new ideas

    Pros

Good structure and overall stable company.

    Cons

Looks the other way with managers that abuse staff - high level of staff leaving after 6 months, tolerance of teams where staff is on permanent medical leave due to stress from management. Having a "culture and values" page on their website doesn't mean you have it in the office.

    Advice to Management

When you see a team where everyone is leaving the company or on long sick leaves - ask why! Having a "culture and values" page on your website doesn't mean you have it in your office.

I worked at SSE full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Brilliant benefits package including employer pension up to 12% (after 10 years' service)

    Cons

The downsides far outweigh the pension! Completely strangled by layer upon layer of bureaucracy. Middle managers are stripped of all autonomy because HR have a stranglehold on most procedures. The organisation is so big that you are very much kept in your job box meaning there is no room for autonomy or creativity. Unless you live in the far south or Perth, Scotland the room for personal development is extremely limited.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees who genuinely care about their roles and are specialists in their industry. Just because you are SSE does not necessarily mean you know best. Just because your senior leadership are SSE through and through does not mean that they know best.

I have been working at SSE (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay levels are OK compared to the total population, but not competitive at all when compared to other companies in the sector. Some job stability if you don't upset the management.

    Cons

Discriminatory. Horrific gender pay gap, which they are reporting on (not really improving, though), and self-congratulating on the reporting!
Company does not accept new ideas and the level of politics is unbearable at the moment. They want to improve and transform but restrict resources and promote those without sufficient t skills (but who are able to play the game and make their face fit). Toxic.

    Advice to Management

It's difficult to know what to say to management. Just listen to employees. Stop witch hunting. Treat people with respect. Care about people, if you overwork them, they most likely will become ill. Show humanity. You won't make it long term if you continue the way you are, the days of paying dividends and getting away with murder are gone.

    I worked at SSE full-time

    Pros

Although they supply a van, tools and training the wages could be much better.
    The employee turnover is rapid.
    Staff come and staff go!

    Cons

A particular female manager is notoriously bad at handling any employee related problems.
Many good meter fitters have been forced into leaving the company when it was not necessary.

    Advice to Management

Remember it's people you're dealing with not property.
Many members of the meter fitting team would make much better managers, in my opinion.

I have been working at SSE full-time

    Pros

The Pension and Extras Benefits are ok

    Cons

Rotten Wood at the Helm in a lot of the areas. Management pick and choose who they'll back and who they won't with development and progression, and is definitely not decided on hard working and dynamic individuals. Narrow minded long standing Employees with no other experience than SSE will not take advice or ideas for improvements.
Frustrating environment and very easy to stagnate.
False promises made for progressive opportunities.
Baffled how such a large company is still trading with such chaos and mis-management.
If based in the South, then forget about any interest from upper management, they look after their own first (Scotland based Employees)
    Can't get out fast enough!!

    Advice to Management

Make study and progression opportunities fair and available to all who are keen, not cherry picking!
Stop passing off the barely Cost of Living increase as a 'pay rise'!
Show that you value your employees and you may find a lesser turn over in staff and employees that want to go the extra mile for the company!
Subsidise your Canteens - the prices are a joke!
