I have been working at SSE full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A living wage must of the time.
Options of shares if you pay in.
Various saving options so long as you put money into them.
    Good PPE provided.
    Transport provided.

    Cons

Regular promises of advancement whilst pushing you to perform more, give more, whilst no advancement is really available.

0 transparency. Junior and lower end senior management like to keep information from you in a bid to hold some kind of influence over you.

    Huge Blame culture.

    Very much a Bullying culture.

Constantly overloading you with work then want to know why it isn't done to the same high access standard as if you only had your own work.

Very face fitting, if you know someone in the senior ranks you'll advance quickly with no need for expertise or test/interview process. You always see the same faces advancing and moving into different roles.

    Very discriminatory.

Very stat orientated. Claim to care more about your safety but when the stats are at risk your own well-being goes out the window and they'll throw the boot at you every step of the way to get what they want e.g. Warnings, performance reviews, performance monitoring.

Full of people trying to justify their own positions by constantly changing work practices, implementing endlessly new procedures and fixing the unbroken, when it doesn't work they simply move onto another project and leave 100's of workers to pick up the pieces costing the workers money and time. Meaning the workers have to then work more to achieve less because the job loads where meddled to much with.

Really want their pound of flesh for the money they give you.

Claim to be encouraging whistle blowing but mark your cards if you do.

Claim to be an equal employer but no equality exists.

Very good at publicising their success, equally good at covering their failures.

Claim to be a great place to work but rarely allow you to complete the actual Great Place to Work survey then try to convince you that you did do it at an earlier date.

Gives incentives for submitting innovations but actually dismiss your innovations then implement them at a later date as their own ideas.

    Advice to Management

Please just take note of above.

I worked at SSE (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some like minded nice people who work there. Some of the customers were really nice, however not able to carry out job to its full due to the comments made below in the Cons section.

    Cons

Endemic blame and bullying culture. If your face doesnt fit or you are not a yes person then this company is not for you. Remember - Perception is reality! What people do and say are completely different. This company says is extremely committed to championing complaints and resolving them, and also being the safest company in the world. What actually happens is that complaints get passes like the proverbial hot potato, fingers get pointed, and if you dont take it on the chin then you are accused of not being a team player and having a bad attitude all because you found a legitimate fault in the reporting and management process and they dont want to listen or do anything about it. This company is all about being seen to be doing the right thing however it brushes everything under the carpet for an easy quick fix. Job satisfaction can never happen because for you to actually do your job properly in the time and manner required as you are trained to do, it is made completely impossible due to the huge amount of anally retentive , ridiculous policies and procedures which are imposed, and management always take a non active role in supporting you.

    Advice to Management

Cut out all of the cancer out of your organisation and redress the shambolic policies and procedures within all facets of the company and you will have a great place to work. Until such time as this happens, every day will become as is was another firefighting situation, where yet again one is always one the back foot. Stop saying that you provide world class customer service until you actually do this within the company and also to your customers.

I worked at SSE part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The salary is good and my team members were friendly and supportive of each other. The cash machine on the premises was very convenient.

    Cons

Although the call centre positions are advertised as solving the problems of customers who call in, what the company is interested in is sales to those customers. Daily and weekly scores, salary increases and promotions all depend on your sales, not on how well you solve customer issues. If you enjoy doing cold sales then this position would be great for you but if it's helping customers you prefer, it doesn't fit the bill.

    Advice to Management

Be more honest in your recruitment advertising as well as in your training. It was only after six weeks that it transpired that we were primarily salesmen and that solving a customer's problem was a minor matter.

I worked at SSE full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Great new office in Reading.
    - Flexible working hours.
    - Attracting great people with a can-do attitude.

    Cons

    - Lack of pace or a sense of urgency.
    - Not listening to the expertise or knowledge which newly hired people bring.
    - Overly complex projects which are not sustainable or viable.
    - Reliance on external consultants.
    - The number of repetitive presentations.
    - When creating a project to deliver new products, the senior management team leading it need to have the correct experience and expertise.
    - "Get it right first time" attitude, rather than "test and learn".
    - One of the most risk adverse companies in the world!
    - Safety is re-iterated beyond belief. You will get shouted at for not holding the handrail when walking down stairs! Seriously!?

    Advice to Management

You have hired experts, yet do not listen to them or involve them in any discussions or decisions. A very "old school" company with a firm and formal management hierarchy. No opportunity to innovate or test or learn products. No opportunity to take risks.

The energy sector is facing challenging times, and without diversifying your portfolio by test and learning and taking risks, there is no future.

I have been working at SSE full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are some good people working there who are very supportive and just want to go a good job. Benefits are ok but other companies offer similar.

    Cons

My office (Portsmouth) is very overcrowded, the management just seem to keep adding new desks. This means it's hard to park, find a free toilet, huge queues in the canteen, and the Air con cant cope in the summer. The whole company has a bullying culture where if you don't make their targets you get a poor performance report. Some of the targets are impossible. It still has an "Old Boy Network" where if your face fits you'll do well in the company.

    Advice to Management

Take time to look at the staff you have. There are many of us that just want to do a good job! Stop the blame culture, and invest in the Penner road building. You need to add more facilities and less desks!

    Pros

Out with the old in with the new......new management could revive this company it used to be a good place to work.

    Cons

This company advertises for career progression but this is a lie. You are just used to do a job and if your face doesn't fit your going nowhere. They will tell porky pies just to show higher management there good at there job . You will not be offered any type of progression or training unless it's mandatory for your job. Company policy will be broken constantly by managers but you do the same it's time for disciplinary action time for a seat on the naughty chair.

    Advice to Management

Stop talking rubbish you can't manage a thing listen to the people that matter and bring the money into the company. Concentrate on building a team and stop thinking about were your next bonus is coming from.
