I have been working at SSE full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Decent salaries, good benefits and they seem to care about your safety and mental well being. Good career opportunities.

    Cons

Very deeply nested corporate structure with lots of barriers and hoops to get things done. Some people are simply obstructive and add no benefit to the company.

    Advice to Management

Create a more relaxed environment and culture for software developers. Developers need relaxed surroundings, peace, comfy clothing and lots of coffee to be creative and productive. Follow best practices more - code reviews, unit testing etc. Embrace change and stop saying "this is how SSE do it".

I worked at SSE full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some nice people at the same working level, flexible hours, good salaries and share incentive plan.

    That's about it really...

    Cons

Over the top safety culture for office staff which makes you feel on edge with anything you do.

Middle management are destroying the place by playing around with teams they know nothing about. They seem to love paying 3rd parties for poor quality work, rather than having in-house teams who care do the work - instead they sit and twiddle their thumbs, even though they are being paid anyway. Crazy.

Most of the benefits aren't really benefits (example energy is cheaper elsewhere even with staff discount).

    Advice to Management

Stop destroying the place and listen to the people doing the work. Please wake up and realise that software is not done/not done - it varies in quality, maintainability, efficiency, security etc, which you won't get from your so called "partners".
