Entitled students. Unchecked work creep. On the faculty side there is little to no upward mobility. Even an additional advanced degree earns you minimal pay increases, 5% I believe. If you come in at a low salary, no matter the value you add to the school, your small salary increase is based solely on an additional higher degree or change in title. So if you come in as a lecturer with a bachelors degree, you’d get two pay bumps with the completion of the masters (covered by the school) and the doctorate (not covered by the school). That would be it. Work 30+ years and the most you’d see are the two 5% pay increases. You do get a cost of living pay increase, but that is what ever the union manages to negotiate so it’s often below the rate of inflation or with concessions. Meanwhile you are getting better at your job, probably encouraged to take on additional committee assignments to make your “reappointment” portfolio look better and not see a meaningful increase in your pay. Oh that’s right, you have reapply for your job fairly frequently. Having a supervisor that sees what your work and being evaluated by students isn’t enough to prove you’re doing your job. You have to document and compile what you’ve done and submit it for review to people that never see your day-to-day and probably don’t even know who you are.
