I have been working at Sage full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

So my last review of Sage was balanced but quite scathing of the then CEO and his policies. Since then we have a new CEO and importantly we can start to see the effects of this change in management. So I felt it time to write a new review (the old review has been deleted). Sage has a large number of product teams and an IS department that offer a wide variety of languages, platforms and frameworks. This means that...

    Cons

So looking back at my last review I was most strong against the Salesforce strategy enforced by the then CEO. The penny has now dropped in upper management and we have changed course on what I believe was a damaging route. There is still some Salesforce development within Sage, but if it is targeted towards existing Salesforce users then there is no means to suspect that it will not be a success. Many of the other...

    Advice to Management

Management, or at least the shareholders seem to have listened, or maybe taken notice of the share price and made the appropriate changes. I still believe that senior management needs to have the guts to say what they really think. I see all too often people in senior roles say the diplomatic thing or take thee middle road because it is the easy route for their careers. Show that you are real leaders, make exciting...

I have been working at Sage full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I have been at Sage for quite some time. For the first few years, I enjoyed it immensely. The people who work here used to really care about each other. Some still do.

    Cons

After a few years of working here, Sage opted to consolidate their subsidiaries into a single global company. This in itself was not a bad thing, but the principles the business is run on has become detrimental to Sage's employees. Velocity is being punted over everything else. Your personal difficulties are no longer important to them. They squeeze you dry and when you have nothing left to give, they squeeze some...

    Advice to Management

Prioritize your employees' needs before your velocity. Happy employees will drive your velocity themselves. If we don't have to worry about things outside of work or how we feel at work, we will focus on producing results. But you are making it impossible to focus on personal and work environment related issues and still work effectively and efficiently. The survey sent out clearly did not have the desired results. The...

I worked at Sage for more than 10 years

    Pros

In the early days after SoTA was sold to Sage it was still great fun.

    Cons

Endless rounds of staff reduction, no value given to human capital, UK ownership clueless about NA market, never ending churn of executives.

    Advice to Management

    None.

I worked at Sage full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Complimentary coffee and tea Free parking Safe and clean work environment

    Cons

A lot of bureaucracy No room for advancement Lack of leadership and vision All the products are really old using dated technologies Poor vacation policy (you are forced to take time off very often) Performance metrics are non-sense and anybody can easily end up on the chopping block Lack of autonomy (micromanagement is highly prevalent)

    Advice to Management

Do the right projects and do the projects right. Stop cutting corners and start treating employees (and managers) with respect. Be transparent. The stock is soaring but every department is facing budget cuts and it is the employees that feel the squeeze. This is only beneficial for all involved stakeholders in the short-term. Eventually this will run the company into the ground as skilled workers are leaving. Stop trying...

I worked at Sage for more than 3 years

    Pros

Relax, no much work pressure. Nice time and management. Have stable product and table team members.

    Cons

Not much innovation, many product on maintenance mode. Not much real online or mobile solutions.

    Advice to Management

Take more risks, more big steps on shifting the online or mobile strategy.

I have been working at Sage full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Work life balance is awesome with flexible hours and work at home opportunities. Lots of vacation and sick time available as you stay longer.

    Cons

Employees are not valued much in terms of salary, training, or promotions. I feel more like a resource or an employee number than I feel like a person who matters to the company.

    Advice to Management

If you want to grow revenue, invest in your people.

I worked at Sage full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The benefits were acceptable although they changed every year. The vacation and sick time were generous. The work environment was very comfortable. The managers were great, they pretty much left you alone unless they really needed something yesterday. Great underground parking.

    Cons

I think the upper management was a bit loopy. They were not always direct with the employees. I suppose when you are going to sell a division of the company you can't let anyone know about it. But blind siding tons of employees with lay-offs sucked. Other than the sale of Saleslogix and Act to Swiftpage it was great.

    Advice to Management

Keep up with technology so you don't end up selling off valuable products for half their worth after years of development.

I have been working at Sage full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great people and team environment. They are willing to adapt new technologies to grow their software. Agile development means minimal time writing documents and planning features.

    Cons

There is a fair amount of legacy code to maintain. The agile development process has its drawbacks as the minimal time allocated to planning typically means parts are unaccounted for in the estimation process; the implementation of any unaccounted parts is expected to be absorbed by the engineer, with no slack given on the schedule. This leads to long hours as developers catch up with unplanned work.

    Advice to Management

Don't change things for the sake of change. Actually have a reason for the change and a predictable and positive outcome. Also consult the people who will be affected by the change. For example, don't lower cube walls for developers just because you feel it makes people more productive. Give engineers more freedom in their work-life balance choices (such as working at home) and more freedom to make technical decisions.

Skeleton crew. Actually, it is more like a skeleton that has lost a few bones. Remains to be seen.
