At Santa Monica, everyone is always interested in making the best game possible. The player's experience is of highest regard, which becomes an important platform to communicate with other developers when there are disagreements.

    Cons

There can be crunch, but it isn't ever strongly expected of you

I worked at Santa Monica Studio for more than 3 years

    Pros

Hard Workers The studio attracts hardworking and top tier senior staff Strong Production team If you have been in the gaming biz long enough then you'd know that a good producer can elevate the quality of a production significantly. Sony had several great producers. Great facility and studio The studio is located in a facility that offers moderately priced food options ($$) and low cost gym memberships($) Studio Snacks Bagels once a week, drinks, fresh fruit and snacks are always stocked up.

    Cons

Management Sony Santa Monica has a big politics problem. Upper management won't communicate or even cross into each other's territories since certain managers are quick to measure egos. This creates some unprofessional situations. Bad Contractor Management When you depend on contractors as much as Sony Santa Monica does, you'd think they'd take some additional steps to take care of them. The studio does an incredibly poor job at communicating with the contractors to the point at which they don't update them on the status of their employment only weeks before letting them go. Contractors are made to feel expendable. Losing key people The studio turns a blind eye to key people leaving the studio. This ultimately hurts the studios talent pool as people in charge of key aspects of production are let go. Lower Pay than other studios The studio needs to step up their game regarding pay. An artist can easily make 10-20% more per annum, going to neighbouring studios.

I worked at Santa Monica Studio full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Speaking just for the art side, they gave plenty of time to work on things and get them done right: seemed like a team that prides themselves on the work they kick out.

    Cons

Huge studio, which can be good in some respects, but predictably bad in others: communication between departments, and vertically within teams, could be better. fair amount of bureaucracy, to be expected.
