I have been working at Severn Trent Water full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The best thing about working for Severn Trent is the stability of the employment. Another thing that is important for me, personally, is the fact that the business serves the natural environment. Additionally there are good benefits, work atmosphere and training opportunities.

    Cons

The career prospects are very limited. Line managers are not interested in developing their charges. It seems that they don't want people to be promoted. They even encourage to stay in one job position forever. To go up the ladder you need to play their game. Managers not really interested in long tangible benefits, but only on quick wins to promote themselves.

    Advice to Management

Care more about people and developing them, noticing and praising their efforts. Don't change things for the sake of changing them in the effort to promote yourself. Don't focus on quick wins only, but see the big picture and the long term benefits to the business.
    However, this requires integrity.

I worked at Severn Trent Water full-time

    Pros

Great benefits package especially pension and share options, CEO very inspiring/enthusiastic, new buildings nice to work in, flexible working and working from home possible

    Cons

Currently seeking to slash costs - canteen now very poor, very hard to get pay increases when moving between internal jobs, will often pay a new external person more than increase the salary of an internal person to an appropriate level to do the same job.

    Advice to Management

Need to focus on the long term and be less short termist. Also address the internal pay issue noted above.

"Focus on yourself, cheat if you have to."

    Pros

The working environment is really good, pay was fantastic and they would actually listen and make changes. The ability to buy more holiday was great, regularly stalls would be set up within the main atrium so you can buy books perfumes etc.

Free coffee and tea was also a bonus.

They do recognise hard work, the rewards and recognition team are always working on fun ideas to motivate staff.

You can really make a difference to a customers situation and they really do appreciate it.

Being able to browse the Internet during idle time.

I worked in the Credit management department (IOC) and working with different departments was very good but you will realise the billing department are very stupid.

    Cons

Everything is based on stats, they don't care about anything else other than getting stats. They drill this from day one. If you don't meet stats they WILL get rid off you.

They're constantly employing more and more people rather then developing current staff.

Management is a joke, there's too much favouritism. You're constantly being watched, anything you do that's against there policies they will force you out eventually.

They hate being challenged, as soon as you challenge them they will target you and call a probation hearing.

You unfortunately have to put your targets before the service you offer customers. For example paperless billing was a big mark down if you didn't ask. Sometimes this isn't relevant to customers who are elderly and find it difficult to view bills. You are forced to put them on the online services.

This job is super stressful with regards to stats that are too far out. They need to reevaluate how they deal with this.

Your encouraged to ask for support and take control, but this goes against you when taken to a probation hearing.

It's a hostile environment and if you want to progress then you need to bend the rules. Unfortunately it's the only way.

Floor support is very good however management are very very snide. Also watch what you say as people who want to move up will snitch on you to management.

    Advice to Management

Develop your current staff instead of hiring new groups who don't have a clue.

Don't just call probation meetings when you like. The situation of the employee needs to be considered as well as the scoring system for monthly scores.

I have been working at Severn Trent Water full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Progressive modern company. Looking at personal growth and industry innovation. A good place to start with. Well looked after, supported. Collaborative. A Professional and well run company but not a stuffy formal environment

    Cons

Employees at satellite sites may feel left out from the fun and games. Some benefits and freebies are only useful for employees based at HQ

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. Keep looking after your staff. Keep listening (which you do very well) Don't forget that a lot of your employees are not and have never been to HQ, throw some appreciation their way occasionally. Its no fun being the unloved red haired step child..

Good prospects if you are liked at a senior level. Good work life balance.

    Cons

Pay is generally on the low side. Lots of changes in the industry could unsettle things within the business. Waiting list for car parking space in head office which you have to pay for. Employee engagement is very low in some areas of the business.

    Advice to Management

Pay more or look at better benefits package or you will fail to bring in the best people.

    Pros

The company provides a clean work environment.

    Cons

The company doe's not acknowledge complaints from employees such as how some upper management treat them. Employees are told one thing when hired, and another after they've been working there awhile. Employees are not treated with respect as to their work and are treated as only "a warm body"to fill the position. There is little if any training.

    Advice to Management

They need to respect their employees and treat them as human beings.

    Pros

Immediate team were excellent and were always willing to put themselves out to help you.
Excellent flexibility to work at other locations and from home if required. Help and support is available but you are not micro managed so cannot fault that at all.

    Cons

Higher and Senior management team ask your expert opinions relating to projects and then just ignore all comments, suggestions and direction that you recommend.
Very blinkered culture where SMT determine what they want to achieve without finding out if and how it can be done.
Also lots of regulation dodging where the legal representatives advice is very rarely taken on board and adhered to.

    Advice to Management

Take the blinkers off and use the experience of your workforce to guide and direct your strategies.

I worked at Severn Trent Water full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Genuine care about health and wellbeing of staff, unlimited tea/coffee! Bonuses, share purchase scheme. 6 weeks paid training. Casual dress. Good salary for role, rising to 19k+ after probation! Save Tax/NI on water bills.
    Friendly competition.
Lots of rewards and prizes for great customer feedback.
    On site dry cleaning
    Emergency leave for family emergencies.

    Cons

UNPAID staff meetings after hours. Food is provided, but would rather be paid for the time!
Unflexibility in shifts. Having to arrive 10 mins early to set up before starting shift.
    Micro-managed.
    No wifi in building.

Expensive canteen for lower paid workers.

Incompetent duty managers, thinning of management.
WORST HR/Recruitment I have ever experienced.
Who you know, not what you know.
Lack of responsibility for customer complaints/problems.
Too many departments, not enough staff.
    Reading off of a script.
Focus on stats, getting payments from everyone, even if they cannot afford a single penny. Pushing benefit deductions, online billing and

    Advice to Management

More responsibility for no pay is not 'development'. It only encourages people to leave! No 6 MONTH probation based on stats, being told in first week you may not have a job if stats arent up to scratch. Look at WHY high turnover of staff is so bad, not just endlessly recruiting.
Flexibility for parents, those of us with caring commitments.
