  1. "The company that knows what it's doing for customers and employees"

    Pros

The culture is based on giving the best possible experience for the employees, while also solving customer's problems. The engineers are either highly skilled or strive to be. The common problem seems to be "how do we clean the mess the previous contractors left us with" - and they tend to excel at that. Superb opportunities for growth: it's the company strategy to make its employees grow. The most important: the company will take care of you, ensure you're happy and that you feel there at home.

    Cons

The projects can be nice... and not very nice. Sometimes you have to deal with ancient horrors. The pay is not the greatest you can get in London - but remember that you will be usually shielded from soul-crushing or failing projects.

    Advice to Management

Do the thing you are doing - the company culture is great. Ensure the knowledge is being transferred on old projects. Expand the hiring pipeline and deal with the company's size.

I worked at Softwire full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

+ Great work environment. Free food, frequent events, annual holiday.
+ Amazing training programme. Great opportunity to launch into a software career. Small and inexperienced company means that career opportunities are great if you are proactive about it.
+ Personally empowering. If someone wants to make a change, they are largely able to try and do so. The company is the sum of a lot of great people.
+ Generous bonuses for technical staff. It may seem like they underpay but the profit share scheme is genuinely great for technical staff.
+ Very smart staff. The staff are genuinely quick and quick-witted. It is empowering to be around them, both for their on-project work and what they otherwise contribute to the company.

    Cons

    - Negative experience with people management. Key staff can be rude. Accusations of sexism are not uncommon. Processes in place to resolve issues here are underdeveloped ("have you tried avoiding them?")
    - Projects are largely uninspiring. The sales team do a great job trying to find interesting and worthwhile projects, but the consultancy nature of the business means that often we have to accept less than desirable projects.
    - General lack of experience. Often projects are run by the blind leading the blind.
    - Can sometimes leave staff feeling a bit 'used'. The company has a 'libertarian' attitude which means it gets involved minimally in the efforts of individuals; but is quite happy to take credit for these to put itself on a wider platform.

    Advice to Management

Take a bigger role in your staff. Put protection and processes in place if there are complaints against others. If something your staff members do is good enough to advertise, support your staff (financially and in time).

  3. "Great environment, challenging work, a little too risk-averse"

I worked at Softwire full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I learned a lot in my time there, even as a relatively experienced developer when I joined. There was a welcome focus on quality. The environment was great as well - plenty of space, good social spaces, lots of events and a good bunch of people. No regrets about joining the company, wish I could have found something like that earlier in my career. Would recommend it to pretty much any junior- to mid-level developer.

    Cons

Career progression is a little fuzzy. There doesn't seem to be a lot of ambition at the company and they tend to play it safe. Those who want to innovate or build products tend to lose interest and move elsewhere, which means the environment is a little self-selecting for those who are either still learning their trade and those who aren't interested in taking risks.

    Advice to Management

Hire some real entrepreneurs! You talk about diversification and seem confused when attempts to do so fail, getting some outside expertise and ideas would really help.

    Cons

Not many qualms at all. While some projects pose interesting challenges others can be more dull.

    Pros

Voted one of the best places to work in the UK. It lived up to the hype, I had a great experience at the office. No pressure but you must stick to your targets.

    Cons

Sales team can become complacent and not enough initiative to work harder.

    Advice to Management

Keep on going with the great work

    Pros

True focus on employee welfare, and personal development. Excellent office atmosphere, with universally very intelligent colleagues. Good starting salary. Okay location. Excellent social events.

    Cons

Salary becomes less and less competitive with time. Some projects can be boring, but can often change. Working off-site can be a chore.

    Advice to Management

Generally a lovely company to work for.

    Pros

It's just a great place to work, no matter how you look at it. Salary is competitive with other Greater London companies, and working at Softwire you can advance quickly (or slowly) depending on how good you are. It's a true meritocracy, where there are no fixed positions - you just get to do what you're good at, and your job will be tailored to what you want are are able to do.

    Cons

Projects can sometimes get boring, though never for too long.

    Pros

    - small, successful and growing company
    - bright staff who are also a nice bunch of people
    - plenty of out-of-work socialising (often with company paying)
    - flexible on hours & work/life balance
    - varied and interesting projects to work on
    - flat management hierarchy & approachable & democratic senior management
    - friendly & respectful office environment
    - annual company conference abroad
    - lots of opportunities to find like-minded people to do stuff with outside of work e.g. company band, sponsored cycle rides (company matches sponsorship), weekend hobby coding sessions
    - I could probably go on...

    Cons

There's really not that much bad to say about them...
    - work can sometimes be "bitty" if working on several small projects at once (especially as a tester as opposed to a developer)
    - as the company is growing pretty rapidly it is starting to become a challenge for it to keep its small company feel
    - sometimes too much going out (though actually there is never any pressure to do so, but it's hard to say no to lots of free social events!)

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing!

  9. "Softwire: a small company is great for personal growth"

    Pros

Softwire really believes in empowering its staff, and further believes that this is what enables Softwire to deliver the excellent customer service that is their primary objecitve. The work life balance is great with table football, pool and company holidays but also real responsibility and the chance to make a difference.

    Cons

You have to work in Kentish Town, which is a little way out of the centre. Of course as a plus point, it does mean that employees can afford to live close to where they work.

    Advice to Management

The processes and methodologies at Softwire are excellent, but sometimes just a little more attention could be paid to communication within the organisation.

I have been working at Softwire full-time

    Pros

The company genuinely cares about staff and clients; it's always reflecting and improving; there's a positive, flexible culture and lots of room for staff to grow.

    Cons

Very few, but sometimes averse to risk.
