I worked at SolarCity full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The opportunity is great for those who can work autonomously. The brand is recognizable and easy to gain customers confidence. Employees working in this industry are generally drawn for humanitarian reasons, making them passionate and dedicated which creates an excellent culture.

    Cons

There isn't a lot of support for professional development. Although there is opportunity to move up, you need to prepare and monitor your own progress. It takes more time and therefore reports and mangers suffer from having to figure things out on their own.

    Advice to Management

This company would be in a better position if more there was more encouragement, support and guidance in the practice of professional development and growth.

I worked at SolarCity full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great health plan. Total scheduling freedom

    Cons

Very political, clicky environment. The integrity level was not at all what I had originally thought it was. The merge with Tesla was the beginning of the end for SolarCity. Upper level management was chosen not by merit and experience, but by connections and friendships.

    Advice to Management

Get back to the culture that was there in 2014. It was a great place to be and we were #1 in the nation. Listen to the folks in the trenches. An MBA with no practical experience does NOT a manager make.

I have been working at SolarCity full-time

    Pros

Good for the planet, good for people.

    Cons

Too much change. Senior leadership does not know what the sales level reps actually do. None of them have done it.

    Advice to Management

Spend time with your lower level employees. See what they do. Understand they are people with lives before you make decisions that have little to no impact on you.

I worked at SolarCity full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lyndon and Elon get it when it comes to people. Their very much about people and doing what's right.

    Cons

Lyndon and Elon have no idea what is really going on at the ground level. The problem is at the VP and Director level. They needed to down size the sales force. Rather then actually cutting the bottom level performers they put very unrealistic quotas on them. Doesn't matter if you are actually selling because they are going to cancel out ANY of your jobs where homeowner requests a limited time hold. Even if the... reason is valid and homeowner is still interested in moving forward. These jobs show up on the Job In Jeopardy report and that report is closely monitored by Executive Management. So if it ever makes it on to that report chances are within a few days they will cancel it. Once it's cancelled your quota is at risk of being missed. If you miss qouta by 1 sale more than once in a year then you get out on a weekly check in and can be fired at a moments notice. This has caused extreme uncertainty within the sales floor and Regional Managers. Over the last 6 months I've watched nearly 300 people either fired for missing quota or bouncing before they can be fired. When you have seasoned team members that have been with the company from the beginning given 1 month to hit quota or be fired then there is a serious problem.

    Advice to Management

If you want to downsize, just do it. Your method has created a culture on the sales floor that has seriously tarnished your vision. The sales floor no longer trust the Directors and above.

I have been working at SolarCity for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Compensation in managerial role - Purpose driven industry - Control your calendar (somewhat)

    Cons

    - Rotting culture due to employees being put on the back burner - Competitive advantage slowing fading away - Continuous management changes - Poor senior management decision making - Unrealistic targets - Unique markets and market challenges not viewed or weighed uniquely but rather all the same - Compensation in non managerial roles - Little to no work life balance - No true days off without using vacation... time

    Advice to Management

Work on making employees happy again. This is not the company that employees would do anything for 1-2 years ago. The culture is rotting and you are continuing to lose great people who built this company to what it was at it's best.

I worked at SolarCity full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The company has the POTENTIAL to be great, but needs a massive overhaul at VP's and Directors of the Inside Sales Department. Elon, the Rive brothers, and the President of Global Sales and Customer Experience are brilliant and great to work for. But they are far removed from the employees actually doing the work to make the company profitable. They will need to eliminate more vp's and directors to get the... company back on track.

    Cons

Current Directors and VP's do not understand the human side of business. They strictly look at Excel spreadsheets and consider their employee's numbers.... and then dont understand why the culture and moral in the office is so low.

    Advice to Management

Understand the human side of business. For your employees and customers.

I worked at SolarCity full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Solar is gaining more acceptance, so more people are willing to talk to you. People like Elon Musk

    Cons

People hate being badgered at Home Depot and Best Buy, so you get a lot of negative push back and insults. Management has horrible communication, little to no training, and they practice fraternalism so if you're friends with a manager, you'll get promoted, but if not, then you have no chance. Leads are manipulated so bogus leads go to new people and or people the management doesn't like, and the good leads go to... "buddies." Certain goals for bonuses are given to you and then right when you're about to achieve those goals, they increase the metrics so you never get a raise. The only way to get promoted is to be liked by management, it has nothing to do with performance, but they make it look like it by manipulating numbers and giving all the good leads to the people they want to promote. You will be forced to "clock-in" at ridiculous hours and locations , yet they still call it "outside sales" which is a joke.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring immature, inexperienced people you think are cool. Stop changing quota and start delivering on what you promise. Recognize that the people who succeed are lying to your customers.
