I have been working at SolarWinds full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

We have a great team here in Dundee, our senior management is great and they care about our future in the company.

    Cons

The management in Canada and the US do not trust out local management and seem to need to be on every call on every project

    Advice to Management

Our UK management is amazing and fully understand our product and our local needs. Start trusting them to do what you pay them to and stop thinking that because you have delivered on premises software for years you know how to deliver cloud.

I worked at SolarWinds (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Free juice, lunch and fruit.

    Good people to work with.

Facilities and tech hand outs are fairly decent.

    Cons

Clear social heirarchy. SDRs treated like the bottom of the food chain who have to slave to make any career progress.

    I worked at SolarWinds full-time

    Pros

    Free lunches twice a week.

    Free coffees.

    Central location.

    Cons

    No shared vision and goals.

Teams working in different locations/on different products do not communicate with each other and are not interested in ever doing so.

Chaotic environment. Priorities change regularly, which means nothing gets done and if something gets done it doesn't get done in time.

No training/possibilities to go to conferences.

Startup mentality. People always think and talk about work, even in social occasions (pints after work, or even during lunch break). Come on, there's more to life than software development.

    Advice to Management

    Get a life.

I have been working at SolarWinds full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Technical freedom. Pay isn’t too bad. Flexible working hours. Decent pension. There’s an ok bonus too.

    Cons

Communication between teams and business units is terrible to non-existent. Parts of the business use Slack, some Skype, some Flowdock and others Teams. Apparently getting everyone on a single app is impossible. The offices I worked in are quiet and talking is unusual. Projects have little to no oversight or buy in from Product and senior management. Poor technical vision. Most projects come down to “OMG we have to ship this now so water that feature down, don’t test it, just get out the door”. I kid you not: you will have no idea why or what you’ll be delivering to the customer. Support process so unclear even the support engineers and developers don’t know what’s going on, meaning support tickets open for 400-500 days. Cue bug crush which ends up just being a stats exercise that’s gamed. Career progression seems to be for those that brown nose. What you’ll do in your role will vary so much from your job spec good luck when it comes review!

    Advice to Management

Care about the end customer. Focus on technical excellence and high quality work. Work on improving communication between mergers and teams. Foster an environment of agility. Get rid of senior management that simply make dashboards and focus on meaningless stats.

    Pros

    Company and Products are good.

    Cons

The Leadership teams are abysmal. If you like playground politics for a day job jump right in. Such a shame the poor and immature culture ruins what was once a decent Dundee employer.

    Advice to Management

Cull the poor leadership. Empower the great talent. Stop the rot.

    Cons

Where to start. Pretend they are customer-centric but reality is screw every last dime from the customer. Nepotism is rife promote your buddies Suck up to the boss and get ahead. Dissenters not tolerated and ostracised. HR complicit. Don’t believe the hype.

I have been working at SolarWinds full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Some very smart people working on some really great products.
    - Lots of opportunities for career development for people performing well. I have seen numerous examples this year already of people moving into new roles and being given development opportunities.
    - Great work life balance. Best of any company I have worked at.

    Cons

Is it perfect? No. However the pros definitely outweigh the cons. Sometimes it can take a while for things to get approved and senior management could perhaps be a little less interfering but on the whole my experience of working here has been very positive.

    Advice to Management

Truest your staff to make decisions.

    Pros

Good developers. Decent processes. Good job security.

    Cons

Not empowering. Constant change in direction. Some offices are considered rock stars while others do all the work.

    Advice to Management

Get a plan and stick to it for once.
