Pros

Before writing this review, let's provide some context to the reviews below: 2016 was a rough year for Somatone, it's true. Somatone is highly dependent on the success of their clients and overall growth of the video game industry to succeed. When the video game industry started to really take off in 2013, Somatone grew exponentially and hired a large a number of staff. However, when the industry started to dip in 2015-2016, the studio was unable to sustain it's size with the lower workload. Unfortunately, due this and the quick shift in leadership, this situation wasn't fully explained to the staff and many were let go suddenly. This past fall, the studio has begun to rebuild itself. Now with a much smaller crew and a new manager, the company has been able to win back old clients, maintain current contracts, and develop new relationships. We have also taken steps to fix past issues; Sound Designers can showcase their work online (once the game is released of course) and pay checks are handled by an outside agency and paid on time. The past work that Somatone created was fantastic and it's unfortunate that we pushed away such great talent. But like I said, things are much better now, and I hope that we will continue to grow and create great work in the future.

Cons

The pay is decent, but could be better. But who doesn't want to be paid more?

Somatone: My Experience

Pros

-You will work on a large quantity of titles. -You will learn to deal with tight turn-arounds and deadlines. -Office is located in a densely populated tech area. -Depending on the current team you have the potential to learn a lot. -Fairly approachable for "entry-level" workers. -Office is pet friendly

Cons

-You will work on a large quantity of titles, however most of these will mobile/casual games. -It is quantity over quality. You will not be given many opportunities to explore creatively. -You will be held to extreme standards and are expected to hit deadlines that are unrealistic. -Employees are underpaid and for the most part don't feel valued. -No benefits were offered. -The workplace is poorly maintained. -There is a general feeling of deceit from the management. It's hard to tell at times if they are being transparent with their team.

Pros

- Worked on a ton of projects, and got a ton of experience as a result. - Sound Designer colleagues were incredible to work with and very supportive

Cons

- Employees were comically under-appreciated. Once worked 24 hrs straight to hit a deadline, and in the morning when management returned to the office, I was asked, "What took you so long?" - Near-zero chance for company advancement. Was once told by the CEO, "This isn't a job you advance in. I'm surprised people stay." - Management and senior staff routinely lied to employees - An absolute factory of a studio: Pump it out and move on. In one instance I'd noticed an audio issue in a game we'd done sound for, and upon alerting the manager was told, "Don't worry about it - they already paid." - Zero benefits - No business card, no business trips, no industry involvement of any kind - Employees were distrusted, kept "behind the curtain" and actively barred from communication with clients/developers - Had to bring in my own gear to use in the studio: Laptop, monitors, midi controllers, etc. Getting new gear was rare at best - Could literally go on for hours about this.
