I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Great people
    - Most employees have been around 30+ years, since Westcoast Energy
    - Very satisfying work, diverse projects
    - Fantastic compensation, benefits and pension
    - Company really encourages internal hiring, making it easy to move around or up
    - Great work life balance, all overtime is compensated and not too much overtime unless your department is not well managed

    Cons

    - Company has changed too much. From Westcoast to Duke, to Spectra, now to Enbridge
    - Hiring poor management who cannot deliver and makes their staff miserable
    - Not a lot of desirable working locations in western Canada
    - Company runs very bare bones in all departments, causing people to be unable to do their jobs

    Advice to Management

    - Stop hiring so many contractors
    - Need to hire and attract more effective managers rather than settling for ones that struggle in their role and cannot lead a team

I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good Benefits including HSA medical option, 980 work schedule, good bonus plan, competitive pay, 401 K match to 6%, pension plan, and good vacation plan

    Cons

Somewhat bureaucratic but I'm sure that's the case with most big companies
Too much travel. This is basically the culture. I travel over 30% of the time

    Advice to Management

Allow more decisions to made at lower levels

I worked at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Stable employer with good benefits and forward thinking on HR side. Good opportunities for those willing to move geographically and develop additional skills and knowledge. However you have to deliver the goods. Have seen some fast movers in this company which aggravates some people that believe you should get a promotion based upon time with the company, regardless of whether the experience is all of one type.

    Cons

Due to stability associated with long term service contracts, you don't see the employment cycles. The upside is the stability mentioned above. The downside is that there are some folks that serve as "blockers" and the company culture in the past was to move them around to similar roles or leave them in place rather than aggressively performance manage them and even exit them. That has changed in the last 1 - 2 years and will change some more in the next 2 quarters with Enbridge taking over. I would expect work opportunities in next 6 months to be contractor type not employee until they sort out their organization and who will fill what positions.

    Advice to Management

Be careful balancing the mix of Enbridge and Spectra employees in management. While both companies have common areas of operation like Ontario LDCs, they really don't haven't played in the same areas together (oil vs gas and regionally). Typical buyouts result in the buyer placing their folks in senior positions and exiting large pieces of the prior management team and midoffice. That might be a mistake here as remaining staff may not have the same institutional knowledge.

    Pros

Flexible work hours, plenty of vacation

    Cons

Behind the times and not willing to change, too many 30+ years employees that like it how it is

I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great stable company who cares about its people, are considerate of work life balance, great people to work with, great benefits, lots of growth both for the people and the business

    Cons

Because its so great the people never leave making it difficult to move up in the organization. The company is currently going through a transition so there is a lot of uncertainty at the moment.

    Advice to Management

Continue to develop and challenge the younger employee base and look for opportunities to incentivize in pay because currently there is no meritocracy and people find that very frustrating.
