      Pros

Good work events (staff parties) Managers and supervisors were nice and understanding

      Cons

Didn't get any proper training on the tills so when I did have to use it in busy periods it was quite stressful You weren't allowed to do refunds yourself, even full time waiting and bar staff, you had to get a manager to do it for you which was time consuming and a bit embarrassing in front of customers

      Good Job, Questionable Career

      Pros

Stonegate offer a fair salary for the job, they are currently being flexible in working from home and offer promotions and discounts.

      Cons

The cons are that it's difficult to move out of the role you are in and that manager's are given high autonomy and little oversight, meaning if you have an autocratic manager, don't expect help, you'll have to resolve any conflicts yourself.

      Fun but stressful

      Pros

Vast majority of people worked with were great team players and a good laugh. Got on with everyone and made some long-term friendships. Good options for internal progression as well as getting experience in a variety of different 'types' of bar as well as the option to transfer up and down the country

      Cons

Doesn't pay too well compared to other places. I was paid around £7.90 an hour for team leader shifts (of course this will have increased now) which I didn't feel adequately reflected the responsibilities held, especially when running shifts. Another problem in some venues I experienced was understaffing, there were nights when it would be just 2 FOH staff and the bar would be 4 deep. This is a problem rooted beyond the venue itself, as our general manager would be frequently told to cut shift. Some other ideas would come from higher up which were at time ill-thought. For example, a 50% of food and drink discount after world cup finished in 2018 without extra staff lead to constant stress and staff actively looking to leave. Head office and area managers were very hit or miss. I saw excellent people in those roles, as well as some who seemed to never say anything positive

      Pros

Good social aspect to the job and progression opportunities

      Cons

Long working hours with lots of manual labor. Lots of overtime which you're never paid or thanked for. Head management are always reducing staff for each venue.

      Pros

You can have quite a lot of fun if your team is good 20% discount on food & drinks

      Cons

Low pay and hard to get onto a progression course as it’s down to your GM and if they don’t like you, you’re out of luck. Long shifts (often with no breaks) or not enough time between shifts (come home at 3am start again at 8am next morning). Barely any accountability for GMs - I’ve worked for a number of different GMs and they all had one thing in common - “delegating” tasks down to lower management and then either taking credit for results or placing full blame on the employee depending on how the task goes. Almost no recognition for extra efforts but I believe this is site specific as I know there are venues where this is not an issue. Hard to book time off - there’s no central holiday booking system so it’s up to the management to do this and it doesn’t work most of the time so good luck trying to get that one weekend off even if you book three months in advance :)

      Pros

Most team members genuinely want to try their hardest and there's a spirit of "We'll get through this together" that can really save a terrible shift. There's an "in-house" training programme that if you can actually find the time to do, can be fairly beneficial to you.

      Cons

Head office doesn't support the staff in their pubs probably. Demands managers work 48 hours a week (not including any breaks, so really 50+), even though they want to lower HO hours from 35+. Upper management in my pub couldn't and wouldn't manage staff at all, so became the sole jobs of lower-ranked managers who already had work pushed on them that would specifically be for the upper management. Lazy, arrogant and unable to handle criticism so happily allowed staff to suffer from physical and mental health, as well as allowing senior staff and lower-ranked managers to leave without properly replacing them and making new members pick up the slack without proper training. Targets are absolutely more important than anyone in this company. They've had staff with serious injuries working shifts that they shouldn't legally, all for the sake of making targets for upper management and HO bonuses. Lower-ranked managers and lower-ranked staff are not compensated properly and receive menial rewards that are basically only redeemable on-site (bar tabs mostly). Upper management was sexist, spreading rumours of sleeping with female staff members, asking them to do the cleaning while allowing male members to essentially chill out. Generally homophobic and racist to staff, misgendering staff, casual homophobic comments, insinuating black members of staff we're lazier because of their culture, with no provisions put in place to meet their specific needs. Accused black staff member of stealing without any evidence (the accused member had receipts for their purchases). Treated minimum wage increase as a 'pay rise' for recently promoted staff who had negotiated high rates. HO doesn't help with paying staff what they're actually worth as they're incredibly resistant to raise anyone wage.
