I have been working at Subsea 7

    Pros

    - When times were good there was a wide variety of work for engineers. Career prospects were good and moving within the company was actively promoted. - Subsea 7 offers a fairly comprehensive benefits package (pension, private health & dental cover, accident & holiday insurance). Benefits can be upgraded to suit personal requirements. - Management held off on job cuts longer than other oil & gas contractors.

    Cons

    - With a ban on promotions and a pay freeze in place for 2 years, there seems little incentive to stay. - After initially holding off at the start of the downturn, Subsea 7 are now in major downsizing moves. While this is intended to be reducing headcount while maintaining capability, it seems more like sweating their assets. - Overtime has been banned without prior approval and then only up to a very small number of hours that have to be taken as time off in-lieu. - There are still too many layers of management and the excessive hierarchy looks set to be retained after the latest restructuring. Where this could have been the opportunity to streamline the organisation, the cuts appear to be falling on those at the bottom, sparing those higher up. - Management (of all levels) have been pretty much invisible lately. - Cutting jobs seems to have taken priority over everything else. - Communication between departments has always been poor and has got worse since the downturn. Inter-company communication is virtually non-existent. - Can feel very much like a clique.

I worked at Subsea 7 full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Young and exciting company. Great facilities and benefits. Interesting work overall and a good place to learn and develop. Work life balance was as it should be.

    Cons

Extremely management heavy since merger with Subsea and Acergy. A lot of people in senior positions not due to ability but based on how long they have been with the company.
