I worked at The Body Shop full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Innovative and quality products to sell, really loved carrying out demonstrations on the customers and watching their faces as they realised they had found a wonder product. Proud of the community trade backing the company had and the strong investment they had in community projects, as founded by Dame Anita Roddick. Commited to their values and core beliefs.

    Cons

Long hours in the retail industry, particularly around Christmas as a manger. Excessive discounts allowed buyers to take advantage of these and the targets stipulated did not always take this into consideration.

    Advice to Management

More investments into stores that would benefit from becoming Pulse stores, particularly those in smaller community orientated areas. Perhaps more family days awarded to the management team who do not often get chance to take weekends off, particularly those who would benefit from this. Training given to Assitant managers to allow them to control the store at peaks weekend times would perhaps allow managers to take days...

I worked at The Body Shop full-time

    Pros

Generous staff discount Free products with new launches Community Traded ingredients Values and campaign

    Cons

They don't treat all their staff fairly. Favouritism is clearly visible especially with promotions and progression. They will look after only who they want to.

    Advice to Management

Treat all your employees fairly and appreciate those who do work really hard.

I worked at The Body Shop full-time

    Pros

Great ethics Amazing products for price Get to meet interesting people both colleagues and customers I had a wonderful team and store manager

    Cons

No training Key holders expected to work 12 hour No support from HO Poor development Pushy sales techniques Part timers could not get enough regular hours to sustain working at the body shop so they moved on

    Advice to Management

Your expectations are too high, you push people to the brink and still expect more, offer better more accessible support from head office, the focus changes to often shop moves are time consuming and take away precious selling time, help Store managers with recruitment they already have so much to do, the training is incredibly poor com to other cosmetic brands

I have been working at The Body Shop full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Staff discount and benefits. 50% off products.

    Cons

Awful work life balance. Company has poor ethical values towards it's own staff. Long working hours. Expected to work or change plans at short notice. Not suitable for people with families or people who have a life outside of work. Invest in some supportive & comfy shoes. Your feet and legs will ache!

    Advice to Management

Appreciate staff with life experience and talent. These are the staff that will engage with your customers more and convert to sales. Marketing and head office have no idea what's happening on the shop floor nor what's happening regionally or locally. To slow responding or keeping up with trends. Figure out a way for retail staff to have an ethical work life balance. Working 10hrs for 7 days straight on minimum wage...

I worked at The Body Shop full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Opportunity to do more than sell products, but help others through fair trade and deliver stories to customers and media alike.

    Cons

Great if you are drawn to work for a charity but not a company which will put its directly employed people's careers first

    Advice to Management

As the company is due to change hands (centrally, not franchisees across different countries) it has a great opportunity to take. Back it's crown!

I have been working at The Body Shop full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

An excellent product to sell, to customers looking for an ethically alternative. I started as a Xmas temp which led me to be taken on permanently and progress through the company. The training is intense but leaves you armed with the information you need to deliver the service they expect. A very hefty 50% staff discount. Free products at very times through the year, with a selection of make-up for new starters. The...

    Cons

Management styles can vary vastly meaning changes can very difficult. Often required to travel for training and meetings although expenses paid. By far the worst aspect of this position are the unreachable targets meaning that bonuses are rarely forthcoming. Also, targets vary inexplicably between similar stores.

    Advice to Management

Targets should be SMART - anyone who's ever worked in business knows this. And achievable targets are so much more motivating to staff.
