I worked at The Body Shop full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Innovative and quality products to sell, really loved carrying out demonstrations on the customers and watching their faces as they realised they had found a wonder product. Proud of the community trade backing the company had and the strong investment they had in community projects, as founded by Dame Anita Roddick. Commited to their values and core beliefs.

    Cons

Long hours in the retail industry, particularly around Christmas as a manger. Excessive discounts allowed buyers to take advantage of these and the targets stipulated did not always take this into consideration.

    Advice to Management

More investments into stores that would benefit from becoming Pulse stores, particularly those in smaller community orientated areas. Perhaps more family days awarded to the management team who do not often get chance to take weekends off, particularly those who would benefit from this. Training given to Assitant managers to allow them to control the store at peaks weekend times would perhaps allow managers to take... days off during peaks times without feeling the pressure to still maintain standards.

I have been working at The Body Shop full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The 50% staff discount is a good perk as well as the flexibility of hours . The RSO guys are great. That's about it .

    Cons

Too much gossiping between higher management and other colleagues. Very poisoning environment. They talk a lot about values/commitment but these are non- existing. Good at preaching but not delivering . At HO no-one seems to know what are they suppose to be doing . HR is unprofessionally close to senior management which makes impossible to raise any real concerns. Unreasonable target . Brace yourself new... starters . Training is not really a thing TBS excels at ,even if they do have a department who takes care of it . 70-20-10 also known as "The island with Bear Grylls " you're left there with no real support but expected to become a master of everything in no time " you can always call another store" All it matters is taking the monies , at any cost , nothing else .

    Advice to Management

Sit down and have a real look at your business . Something is not right and you just can't see it or pretending not to . Don't know what's worse. Come up with real commercial strategies instead of using and abusing the same old bits on your weekend focuses etc. Listen to your managers . I don't believe nothing is going to change , it seems like a doomed company . But not to worry you will still take the monies ..., who cares who you are going to sacrifice on the way .

I worked at The Body Shop full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Product discounts and occasional free products for team with npd launches

    Cons

Not enough hours for p/t employees, not competitive pay for associates. Workload is unrealistic sometimes with the hours given. Shipment and delivery inconsistencies, consistently sold out of “hero” products and customers are kept on wait lists for ever. Systems and processes are outdated. High waste of products- from products being opened and used. More support needed from corporate business partners with... recruitment needs

I worked at The Body Shop full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very generous discounts/gratis product Company doesn’t test on animals/is forward about charity

    Cons

Unreasonable/unrealistic sales goals that pit employees against each other Managers can manipulate sales goals to make themselves look better Upper management cutthroat and not understanding about ridiculous sales goals Unclear policies/quick policy changes Below average compensation Potential for extremely low hours Terrible benefits package High turnover

    Advice to Management

Rethink the personal sales goals because all it creates is a very cutthroat environment where employees (managers) can manipulate each other. Be more realistic about sales goals. Update technology that matters to make tracking of sales simpler.

I have been working at The Body Shop full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Working for a company so invested in its people and values has been an incredible privilege so far! This isn’t another retail job - it’s The Body Shop. Sharing community trade stories and sustainability goals with customers is a true joy, as are the campaigns. Forever Against Animal Testing is truly making waves. Head office (Canada) is incredibly accessible and down-to-earth and are a wealth of support and... knowledge. There is true camaraderie between teams, stores, and districts. Everyone, right down to customer consultants, are empowered to go the extra mile to ensure repeat business and happy customers. Heaps of training in body care, skincare, makeup, consultations, and product knowledge. I’ve never felt abandoned or alone in this job.

    Cons

More ‘remote’ locations aren’t always a priority for replenishment, which can be tricky at Christmastime. Also not allotted the same promotional materials as in larger centres, so it can be a bit frustrating to see massive successes from other shop’s events while not having been given the same opportunity.

    Advice to Management

Would love to see a stronger focus on supporting ‘remote’ locations! Namely in promotional materials. :) This is pretty minor, though. Thanks for being so great!

I worked at The Body Shop full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Gratis, L'Oreal discount, and brand loyal customers from all over the world. My team under me was amazing. My immediate supervisors were well intentioned.

    Cons

The vision that Anita had that a business could be a force for good has long been forgotten here. Lush has become what The Body Shop could and should have been. The product packaging has been changed to be "pretty" and completely wasteful, rather than reusable. There are no more real campaigns for humans, the environment, and barely even for animals. We preach about the importance of "natural" ingredients, but the... products are loaded with chemicals and denatured alcohol. The corporate team is beyond disorganized, and far too focused on b.s. scripted strategies to try to connect with new millennial customers. There is way too much pressure on District Managers to constantly be changing tactics to chase after customers, which then comes down on the shop level, and makes everyone miserable.

    Advice to Management

What ever happened to hiring genuine people that like the product, and like talking to customers? It worked great in my location. The segment accountability managers, zoning, moisture meters, and all of the other nonsense isn't necessary, or working. Focus on employee engagement instead of making us put on a show when the corporate teams/Regional Managers are in town. The customers want knowledge and advice, not the... same b.s. lecture about Drops of Youth every time they walk into the store.

    Pros

Great products. Values are truly reflected in what they strive to offer customers. Lots of gratis products, so you can really try them and offer your own experiences.

    Cons

There is "it's never enough" attitude from upper management. No "on the ground" support from upper management.

    Advice to Management

The hiring process needs to be streamlined and faster. And higher pay to attract and retain candidates.
