I worked at The University of North Carolina System

    Pros

Great place to work, great people to work with

    Cons

The only disadvantage to working here was that is was grant-funded and grant money is more difficult to come by.

    Advice to Management

Try to make sure you have consistent funding before hiring new people and then letting them go 13 months later,

    Pros

Working in a university environment is a good fit for people who are looking for a job that will allow you to balance work and home life.

    Cons

There is a lot of red tape and it is often difficult to push new ideas forward.

I have been working at The University of North Carolina System full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Flexible work hours. Great work/life balance. Many great and talented people.

    Cons

No pay increase. It is hard to advance, paper work can take years. Little oversight of supervisors. Pay to park.

    Advice to Management

Start letting the employees review their supervisors, it may be very enlightening. Mandatory management training for those in a management positions. More rewards and gratitude for the average worker, maybe a kudos system.

I worked at The University of North Carolina System full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I worked with a great group of people in a fantastic work environment. I was told the job would last several years.

    Cons

The job barely lasted a year. No raises because of the State Legislature. Office of Human Resources has no idea what they are doing, so try to work with the individual department if at all possible.

    Advice to Management

Consider a total overhaul of the Office of Human Resources.

I worked at The University of North Carolina System part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Exciting to be surrounded by so many motivated and talented people. Also while it may depend on the department in my experience the group was very flexible and made an effort to make working together enjoyable.

    Cons

The State Health Benefits do not rank well compared to other states we are limited by the small market.

    Advice to Management

Advocate for better health insurance options for your employees.

I have been working at The University of North Carolina System

    Pros

Medical benefits are good because the employee portion is reasonable.

    Cons

The CIO has no clue as to what is going on and his actions indicate he doesn't want to know. ITS has become one of the most negative places with people starting to turn on one another. External departments do not "like" ITS and have no confidence. A lot of departments are trying to find a way to handle some or most of their own IT processes.

    Advice to Management

CIO - Climb out of your BMW and come down from your ivory tower and try to muster enough concern about the employees. Better yet, perhaps there is another university that you may be interested in working for.
