A company that says it cares; but not about its employees.

      Pros

Good relationships between staff in store, though this obviously will not be the case everywhere. Friendly and entertaining customers, though again, that may not be the case everywhere else.

      Cons

I've worked at my branch for 14 months now; three as Store Assistant before being promoted to Supervisor. In that time, 14 members of staff have left, nothing done by the company to try to keep any of them. Last year's bonus situation ended up an absolute disgrace; as a store that finished in the top 100 of a metric, we should have got a nice bonus. Due to various shenanigans, we actually received less than 60% of what we were told. Deliveries are ridiculous right now, there is zero consistency in the time they arrive, so it can be anywhere from 10am to 5pm with no warning. When they do arrive, they are filled with so many errors, so many items not matching to how they should have been sorted, that it is adding hours on to doing a single delivery. Which, when you are permanently short staffed, is absolutely no help. Regional Managers vary wildly in use; some are willing to do what it takes to help, others will send out area-wide emails blasting people for having a life outside of Toolstation and daring to put other things before work, including family. Other crazy demands include; arbitrary deadlines for hiring staff, stores being told they cannot close early although this would mean the 4 members of staff available having to do 20 hours overtime a week EACH, far too much focus on trying to push so many things on customers (trade credit, flyers, charity, countertop items, addon sales, not having anyone just buy something and leave without giving you all their information). There is more than this, but I think this gets the gist across.

Fairly easy job, pay could be better.

      Pros

The job is fairly simple, and the people are generally friendly. Yearly bonuses are available to top-performing stores. MyPerks website allows access to discounts and offers at a range of companies.

      Cons

In the last couple of years the company has been rapidly expanding opening a lot of new branches, but has struggled to fill the required roles, instead leaning on support from colleagues in the area. This means there's often extra hours available if you want them, but there can also be a lot of pressure to work extra/longer shifts which can impact work-life balance. Pay isn't keeping up with inflation.

Company making money, but not you

      Pros

Most of the staff I work with are great but thats about all the pros.

      Cons

A few of the staff are absolutely awful, they make your job harder, unsafe and cause so much stress along with having customers who are rude and ignorant. If you complain about the other staff breaking health and safety, making your job unsafe, harder, take longer and how much stress they put the rest of the team they take about 6 months to do anything and all they do is have a "word" but nothing happens. You cant do anything about aggresive, rude or ignorant customers as if you complain or do anything then you get in trouble becuase of it. The company growing at a good rate and opening 2 new stores a week but they cannot pay out any bonuses and have since taken away all bonuses and insentives so work harder. This company is not worth your time and the management is absolutely god awful, the delivery is beyond terrible but any mistakes with delivery the store has to take the hit for and they do not seem to be doing anything to the warehouse staff or how its done to make it any better,

      Horrifically understaffed

      Pros

In-store team tends to be good (before they get sick of it and leave) Wage stream is pretty cool I guess.

      Cons

Stores are horrendously mismanaged by people who seem to have just fallen into the role by process of everyone else leaving. As a keyholder you will probably be expected to work over your contracted hours and often times upwards of seven days in a row to cover for other keyholders when they have booked holidays. They expect you to have all holidays booked a year in advance which typically doesn't work for the sort of people who go for part time entry level jobs. Sometimes really long hours and a lot of pressure on you as a keyholder to fill in gaps in the rota made by management going on holiday
