I worked at TransferWise full-time for more than a year

    Pros

It's a mission driven company, and you can hear that listening to the founders words on a daily basis. Great working environment, flat hierarchy, talented colleagues, travel opportunities. It's also a great name to have on your CV.

    Cons

You need to know what you're doing from day one, receiving little guidance in the process. The flat hierarchy and autonomous team can result in a lack of clarity and vision.

    Advice to Management

    More structure and direction.

  3. "A mission driven organisation"

I have been working at TransferWise full-time

      Pros

Working on a real consumer problem with a bunch of smart and motivated people. There is a flat organisational structure where people are empowered to figure things out for themselves rather than being told what to do. Flexible hours and a relaxed environment allow you to be yourself.

      Cons

Some teams work across offices which can be challenging for collaboration. Salaries are higher at other companies.

I have been working at TransferWise full-time for more than a year

      Pros

TransferWise has seen a very exciting growth over the past few years and the addition of a very excited pool of talent who are evangelical about the organisation. From a small startup 5 years ago, it has grown to 550+ people in Europe and the US with additional international locations and coverage being added. The company offers a very pleasant work environment with modern offices and "fun" facilities including relaxation...

      Cons

The company still behaves like a small startup in many ways. Although this has a positive impact on the ability of the company to move fast forward and empowers staff to be independent thinkers and free to decide on their own KPIs, there are some teething problems encountered in the process such as the lack of central direction, interdepartmental communication and consistency. Furthermore the company has recently...

      I worked at TransferWise

      Pros

Really positive atmosphere in the office. Everybody has the same ambitions for the company and really strives to achieve them. No one feels themselves better than others.

      Cons

Company is growing fast. I hope they will continue to keep their characteristics as a start up and their ambition to stop the bad exchange rate banks.

      Advice to Management

Continue listening to all the ideas coming from everyone. This really differentiates this company to others.

I have been working at TransferWise full-time

      Pros

High level of freedom and the ability to define and deliver your own destiny. Great, smart people. Open and honest culture. The opportunity to work on problems which have never been solved before.

      Cons

Autonomous teams can sometimes mean lack of direction or inefficient scenarios. Can be overwhelming at times in terms of pressure and working hours. Missing a lot of common/basic benefits like pensions, health/dental care, sick pay, gym membership, death in service etc. I'm young but these are important and as the company now employees 500+ people these should really be provided.

      Advice to Management

Company needs to sort out recruitment. Little direction or support even for strategically critical positions.

I have been working at TransferWise full-time (Less than a year)

      Pros

I moved from a big corporate to work at TransferWise. It has been an incredible experience. Some specific examples: - Complete decision making autonomy within your area of responsibility. An end to time wasted getting "buy-in", or writing committee papers. - Pace of progress is stunning. Every week you see incredible changes and your own impact being brought to life. Your time at work = improvements to the life of...

      Cons

Growing so fast there is a risk that the culture will change for the worse over the year ahead. I'm optimistic that it will not, but this will need strong vigilance and action from leadership.

      Advice to Management

Keep an eye on the "senior" level - this is where there are signs of the culture fading (e.g. turf wars)

I have been working at TransferWise full-time

      Pros

I feel sad for the people for whom TransferWise is their first employer, because it effectively ruins their lives - they will not want to work for any other company with less enthusiasm for their goal. The purpose of the company really unites the teams and creates a great atmosphere unlike anywhere else.

      Cons

Like I said - the company culture and feeling of empowerment may haunt you forever. If there are any cons, its raising the bar so high. While you get enough perks in your job, it's not a company that lures you in with the promise of free lunches. If you're looking for a hefty benefits package, you shouldn't be looking at the start-up world anyway.
