I have been working at TransferWise full-time for less than a year

    Pros

You work with some seriously smart people here. I constantly feel driven and challenged to think differently all the time. We are scaling quickly, so really this is an environment for people that can handle a fast paced, but inclusive environment. I also have two kids, one of the biggest things for me is that no-one batters an eye at the time i come in late or leave early... Or that i work from home one day a week. Loads of great perks; 6 week paid sabbatical + your holiday for that year, annual all company paid trip, stock options, breakfast, friday lunches, 5% pension, yoga, gym and more.

    No Opinion of CEO

I have been working at TransferWise full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Smart people, driven environment, very challenging.

    Cons

Inconsistency, some leads are resting and vesting. Some new people are political and will gain more power because they look for it. Some old timers are not suited to their role anymore and the role outgrew them.

    Advice to Management

    - don't get political - stop rewarding the opinionated engineers that have short success only to let other engineers clean the mess later

I worked at TransferWise full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    * you get to work with some really smart people [Tech] * People are really passionate about company values and what they are trying to achieve [business].

    Cons

    * Tech is average. They have a monolith in groovy [although most of it is moved to Java]. nobody wants to touch it.. when they do .. everything breaks! * Both teams and engineers are supposed to be super autonomous and they take it to a whole new level! Most of the time you get answers like "Just Google! Don't disturb us.. be autonomous" * Not very collaborative teams, people work in silos.. collaboration = status updates. they insist you slack/msg your teammates even if you sitting next to them. * Feedback culture is quiet good. its constant but the only problem is you will never be asked "How can i help?". * Not everybody can fit into TransferWise culture, it is perfect for people who like to come to office at 9, don't like getting disturbed.. finish work at 6 and head back home.

I have been working at TransferWise full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great culture and working environment, incredibly smart people to work with and learn from. Support to develop and grow, numerous opportunities to take initiative. Very strong mission that is more just buzzwords.

    Cons

Due to how fast the company is growing, there are issues with lack of available free (permanent) desks and meeting rooms. Cross-team efforts are not so easy to coordinate as all teams are autonomous.

I have been working at TransferWise full-time

    Pros

    - Open and transparent culture - Lots of opportunity to get involved and try new things - Short turnaround on features means you can have an impact immediately - Prioritisation is based upon data and value, not politics - A company driven by a mission to change things for its customers - Great smart people who care about each other - Great working environment with a lot of benefits

    Cons

    - Autonomous culture will not be a fit for everyone - Base salary is higher at some other places but you are compensated with stock

I have been working at TransferWise full-time for more than a year

    Pros

TransferWise is unique in the way that it empowers its people to take ownership and get things done, without a single committee or taking decisions for approval. This allows lots of very smart people to work in parallel at a very fast pace, without getting in each others way, providing an incredibly opportunity to learn from your peers who are fighting to ship great products for customers, rather than each other for a promotion.

    Cons

Without top down direction some people find the ambiguity challenging and you need to be able to define your own role, what impact you want to have, and how you will achieve it, without reference to a corporate strategy or a managers direction.

    Advice to Management

Great job and keep the culture - its what makes us successful.

I have been working at TransferWise full-time

    Pros

High level of freedom and the ability to define and deliver your own destiny. Great, smart people. Open and honest culture. The opportunity to work on problems which have never been solved before.

    Cons

Autonomous teams can sometimes mean lack of direction or inefficient scenarios. Can be overwhelming at times in terms of pressure and working hours. Missing a lot of common/basic benefits like pensions, health/dental care, sick pay, gym membership, death in service etc. I'm young but these are important and as the company now employees 500+ people these should really be provided.

    Advice to Management

Company needs to sort out recruitment. Little direction or support even for strategically critical positions.

I have been working at TransferWise full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Strong culture of autonomy and independence. Smart people - I especially like the customer- and product-centric attitude in software engineering organisation. Clear mission. Since the product is growing (both in volumes and complexity due to geographic expansion and new features like the borderless account), the team is also growing rapidly and thus career opportunities are good (either for more responsibility or for leading people). While there is a lot of challenging and feedback, it's mostly constructive and warmly presented. It's certainly the best job I've ever had.

    Cons

The independent and autonomous culture can create noise - a lot of opinions and feedback - and this can slow you down or frustrate you, especially if you're a new Product Manafer. Later on, you learn to hear the opinions out and consider them, but ultimately make your own decisions as a product manager. Some growing pains - as the organisation has grown in size, some aspects of leadership have not scaled quickly enough. This can feel like there's a lack of direction (lack of roadmap that is, the mission is quite clear and reminded often) or lack of clarity in some roles and responsibilities. Work-life balance can be difficult, since in an independent and autonomous team you're kind of master of your own fate and are expected to create a product much better than the alternatives.

    Advice to Management

Clearer responsibilities and expectations in the leads-of-leads section.
