    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Transport for NSW full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Above private sector pay. Zero tolerance for harassment, discrimination and bullying.

    Cons

Staff held back from development opportunities. Managers don’t get told how much budget they have left for staff training. Performance review is a tick in the box exercise. Culture of laying blame and slowing down results with red tape, which results in branches, teams and agencies not sharing information. Slow workplace which is unmotivating. Don’t recommend if you’re ambitious and have a low to medium rank in comparison to the many ranks above you.

    Advice to Management

Truely listen to staff on what issues affect their work results and support them in making improvements. Hire leaders that can inspire and support staff development.

    Neutral Outlook
    No Opinion of CEO

I have been working at Transport for NSW full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Leadership from the executive is encouraging change and innovation, diversity and well being and leading by example Great work-life balance Flexible working arrangements are supported Remuneration is reasonably competitive Lots of exciting developments in this sector and lots of enthusiasm within the NSW Government in improving transport infrastructure

    Cons

Still struggling to shake off the big bureaucracy legacy of its huge and long-serving workforce. Organisational change is painstakingly slow and morale-deflating at times Like any government agency, innovation is limited by the Acts of parliament that govern the rules of the organisation and the low risk appetite of some managers Opportunities for growth and development within the cluster (e.g. to move around) limited by poor processes and too much red-tape Recruitment is also too slow Delegations of authority too restrictive

    Advice to Management

Continue with the enthusiasm for change, and don't be disheartened by the people who are struggling with the change. Need to move to a leaner organisation, with more autonomous business units responsible for their own success. Outsource all operations and maintenance activities to private sector, so focus remains on policy, regulation, customer services and growth/improvement (planning, development and delivery of projects)
