I worked at UNC Chapel Hill full-time

    Pros

Because departments need lots of students to enroll in the lower level undergraduate courses, they will also employ graduate teaching assistants (TAs) to help facilitate discussion sections for those courses; this is how most PhD graduate students at UNC receive their stipends. This means there are lots of opportunities for graduate students to teach.

    Cons

The university does not pay PhD students well ($15,700 NOT including student fees), and in fact, the pay is considerably lower than the peer universities (e.g. Berkeley, UVa, Michigan, etc) to which the university often compares itself. With student fees being $1000 per semester, the already low $15,700 is really $13,700. Not great.

    Advice to Management

Pay PhD students more and cover student fees.

I worked at UNC Chapel Hill full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, I was on a research team and was well funded. Was walked through the onboarding process in a helpful way.

    Cons

After 4 years, I couldn't stand the bullying. Not myself, but other colleagues. From my supervisor to colleagues, there was a culture of mocking and belittling, competition was encouraged in a toxic way, and there was no way to report it to hr because I wasn't the one being bullied and the victims feared for their jobs on a small team.

    Advice to Management

Create an anonymous way to address team dynamics. It was toxic.
