I have been working at UNC Chapel Hill full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people are great to work with, and there's good work/life balance.

    Cons

The organization could be more nimble, especially in regard to HR practices.

    Advice to Management

Make it easier to hire and retain good people, and make it easier to dump the bad ones.

I have been working at UNC Chapel Hill full-time

    Pros

The school has good logistical support (administrative staff, environmental health and safety staff, facilities and laboratory resources), resources such as software, bus service, and in general there seem to be a lot of events for university members (recruitment events, informational events, seasonal celebration events, flu shot events...). The university has a good reputation. The cost of living is pretty low. The airport is fantastic (and close).

    Cons

Parking is very expensive and not always convenient; using the bus service may be necessary for not only students but also faculty and staff. If you are a postdoc or PhD student in a well-regarded research group, odds are the group is very large and you may primarily receive guidance from your peers. The administrators associated with your department may be very few people managing many tasks, thus routine paperwork and administrative tasks may fall to you or be delayed.

    Advice to Management

More front office staff with clearly defined responsibilities is generally helpful to any department. A work-order tracking system is helpful too.

    Pros

There is good training for TA's, and opportunities for pay increase by teaching additional classes.

    Cons

It is a lot of work in addition to graduate classes.

    Pros

    Meal stipend, interacting with residents

    Cons

Say they care about RAs and then treat them horribly - make them do all their dirty work

    Advice to Management

Give the RAs a voice, respect their opinions, stick to the contract, and when you say they are 'students first' - mean what you say
