Supportive environment for postdocs, but experiences may vary widely depending on which section you are in.

The quality of the infrastructure is a ongoing problem, but it seems like addressing the issues is important to management.

Great People, Underfunded, Facilities are falling into disrepair
RecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Working at NRL allows you to work on excellent research projects with a quality team of people
Cons
1) Government bureaucracy! 2) Facilities are falling apart. Some of the buildings need to be demolished, but they're standing due to some federal rules. Almost every roof is leaking. 3) Stinky neighbors! Sometime the smell of blue plains (DC's biggest water treatment plant) wafts over to us.

Fantastic scientists to work around hindered by dated infrastructure and red tape
RecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great team, everybody around me has a PhD (disclaimer: will depend on your division/branch of research), good availability of resources to conduct research, great compensation (highest I've seen for a postdoc outside of industry), flexible work schedule
Cons
Poor infrastructure, slow building and renovation work which often delays projects, typical bureaucratic red tape (not any worse than any other gov't organization), little to no real "food options" on site, anti-social colleagues (not necessarily a con for some people), lack of good public transportation from in or out of DC

Pros
Lots of excellent equipment and instruments, knowledgeable co-workers, friendly environment. Opens doors to other government jobs: DoE, DoD, DARPA, DTRA, etc.
Cons
Security clearance and IT staff can make it difficult to get up and running quickly (but it's understandable). Difficult to install any foreign software - must have IT approval. Sometimes there isn't any substitute for these types of programs and can slow down progress.
- Current Employee, more than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
The research projects are exciting and typically well funded. There is nearly unfettered access to excellent instrumentation for any materials science research you may wish to perform. Colleagues researchers are knowledgeable and helpful.
Cons
Government work can be difficult to adjust to coming from academia, specifically the mechanisms by which instruments and research supplies are ordered and delivered to the laboratory.
