I have been working at US Naval Research Laboratory full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

NRL has some of the leading researchers in their field and the latest and greatest equipment. The potential to collaborate and work between disciplines is good.

    Cons

Management direct as a whole changes frequently and is brutal for entry level scientists look to move up. The moral is low and work expectation are extremely high.

    Advice to Management

Employee moral is extremely low, and that can be better achieved through support on the scientific programming and career development and less on the fluff.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at US Naval Research Laboratory full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I am a research oriented person and there are interesting research work in NRL if you can obtain funding. There are a lot of very smart and talented people here providing a challenging and intellectually stimulating environment. I appreciate the opportunity that has been provided to me so far. Also with the tough economy, this place seems more stable than most of the industry. There is also a great history of research...

    Cons

You constantly have to scurry around for future funding either through the base program (which only funds 20% of the laboratory internally) or DARPA, ONR, NAVAIR, etc. To obtain funding is challenging because you are competing against universities and other laboratories. This has sometimes lead to people pitching ideas that they do not necessarily want to work on. Salary growth has been fairly stagnant and there was...

    Advice to Management

Give salary increases as they have been stagnant. Too much pressure

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at US Naval Research Laboratory full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good science and interesting applications. Dedicated and committed staff. Good balance of strategic and tactical projects

    Cons

Too much time spent looking for funding. Lack of funds can lead to silly inter-office politics. Uninvolved and disengaged Management that often competed with their direct reports. Commute can be difficult

    Advice to Management

Help scientists with their ideas. Be more involved in their development
