Pros

Large company working across all areas of financial services therefore plenty of varied work opportunities for those that don't like working in the same job for too long. Prior to the Royal Bank of Scotland takeover Ulster Bank was a company that paid it's staff well, recognised the staff's union, had a very low turnover of staff, staff at local unit level had delegated authority and accountability and operations were decentralised. It was a good place to work were everyone knew everyone else and pride was taken in customer service and in the business.

Cons

After the Royal Bank of Scotland takeover of NatWest and Ulster Bank a huge cost-cutting programme focussing on staff pay took place with the union largely being ignored and with new contracts imposed and pensions changed. Operations and authority (e.g. to lend) was centralised and customer-facing staff were given stringent sales targets. Staff turnover went through the roof and customer service hit the floor. Large parts of the business became difficult places to work in.

Pros

City Centre Location, that is about it!

Cons

I was initially recruited for one role and ended up being "seconded" without discussion to many different teams, which meant that responsibilities were often confusing. There was an interim management team in place, they were brash in their approach, did not follow HR process, to be fair no process at all. You were expected to work around 12-14 hours a day and were constantly reminded that you were on a good salary and should be grateful. The TL's were not trained, skilled or people managers and often bullied their staff to get outcomes. I was glad to leave as it was an unhealthy and very stressful place. I also believe that they didn't have the customers best interests at heart and were there to make a fast buck on move on to another contract.

Pros

Contract work allowed me to work for a summer while studying for my Masters. With so many locations it is easy to get into a branch close to home. Made good relationships with customers as it was a small town branch. Good working hours.

Cons

Poor training, it was all on the job so any mistakes made in the learning curve were real life mistakes. A lot of pressure on staff to make sales.
