I worked at United Utilities full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Friendly colleagues
    Relaxed atmosphere
    Decent salary and benefits

    Cons

Management and senior workers range from mediocre to clueless, which leaves you wondering how they managed to get to where they are.

If you're seeking work with this company and happen to be clever, ambitious and talented, don't expect to get an offer of employment. The interviewing panel will undoubtedly find multiple reasons not to like you so expect a lot of curve balls to be thrown at you. If you have no talent or are less talented than those interviewing you, then the panel will probably warm to you and give you an easy interview.

External hiring for senior posts means opportunities for promotion are limited and you will again end up with a manager or senior colleagues who know much less than you do (as above).

    Advice to Management

Stop pretending your technical interviews are cutting the mustard and raise the bar in terms of talent, top down.

I have been working at United Utilities full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Within my role, I am able to positively influence strategy and support the business through identifying areas of risk and improvement. I am treated with respect and have been made to feel like a key person in the successful delivery of the business.

    Cons

Due to the upcoming "Open Market" for water in 2017, the business has taken the decision to merge with another water utility company and as such is currently going through a merger and moving location.

    Advice to Management

Stay balanced in the delivery of service to the customer, your people and the business.

I worked at United Utilities full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits of working for a large organisation, good benefits package, flexible working, some really good people.

    Cons

    - Many people have been there far too long, and have no idea of how they are supposed to do the role they are currently in.
    - The company waste money - they recruit contract staff without having work for them, on the premise that 'at least there is only a 4 week notice period' to let them go.
    - Management have no idea what they are doing.
    - Senior management in some areas are highly egotistical, rude and have no integrity.
    - They have absolutely no idea how to run projects and programmes of change.
    - Culture is that of 'take everything you can get away with'.
    - People are treated well or not depending upon the view of 1 or more senior people.
    - Bullying and poor behaviors are avoided, and certainly not addressed.
    - Internal staff are often overlooked for promotion.
    - Recruitment process is awful - it's quantity rather than quality.
    - Business Retail management is dreadful - the mind boggles how some people get to where they are.
    - Senior women working here have the mentality that they have to behave like a total b*tch to show authority.

    Advice to Management

    Get new management!
Understand your finances and stop literally flushing money down the toilet.

"A once good company ruined by Wannabe's and Deadwood"

I worked at United Utilities full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Average salaries, with good staff benefits. Good Performance & Development structure.

    Cons

A mixture of those who have been there 20+ years who are stuck in their ways and unable to accept of deal with change who plan to remain until they receive severance, or die. Then you have the wannabe's who say yes to everyone above them and stamp over everyone else to get to the top. Work here if this is you, or you work in such a depressing environment already that you are used to being controlled like a slave.

    Advice to Management

Remove the deadwood. Listen to your employees, and identify and develop your staff. Remove those who only care about themselves, and maybe you might just get a supportive workforce once more.
    Start by removing HR.

I worked at United Utilities full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Technical and Engineering posts are brilliant. Good for engineers but Water and Waste Water are lowly paid for engineers. Great places to visit, good people to work with. I received lots of training until the cuts came in about 2006.

    Cons

Nobody can make a decision on the own. Everything has to have multiple meetings and it seems that nothing ever changes. Group think and 'yes men and women' survive, always agree even if you disagree. If you don't agree with your manager you will be given 'severance'. HR are the enforcers.

    Advice to Management

Accountants are great at Accountancy! Water engineers are great at Water Engineering. The assets that you own and operate today were not built on 10 year asset life, they were built by Victorians to last for 100 years. Directors should stop thinking about the 3 year share bonus plans and think about the longer term interests of the company. "Maintenance" is a dirty word and the company wastes tens of millions of pounds building great assets and then not maintaining them.

I have been working at United Utilities full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Compared to previous jobs, I've always been treated exceptionally at UU. It's like being part of a huge family, and the company has some fantastic people to work with, and some exceptional talent.

Excellent company pension and share incentive plan to join. Lots of other benefits available to enjoy every year. The company communicates well with employees to keep everyone apprised of new developments / company direction.

There is ample opportunity to progress in the business, and to learn more about other areas. The companies' dedicated Learning & Development team ensure there is always more to explore for those with a thirst for knowledge and drive to improve.

    Cons

The company is in need of Plain-English bleaching. Far too many young hot-shots cropping up who love to talk almost exclusively in meaningless buzzwords.

Many of the people in the IT side of the business are downright arrogant, believing their supreme expertise in whichever IT profession grants them the right to condescend to those who don't see the world in ones and zeros.

    Advice to Management

Get the Plain-English campaign back in. Get rid of those senior staff who have let the power go to their heads.
