Avoid if you're GLBT

Pros

Decent work-life balance. Average salary. Good company to be in if you're an engineer and don't work in management.

Cons

Some basic issues: Engineering management is out of control, with little accountability in relation to quality and quality objectives. As mentioned previously, there's little understanding in engineering management between personal leadership and actual business management, and it's definately reflected in their processes. But that's not why you should this company if you're GLBT. There's not much of a GLBT culture at UASC, with little in the way of UASC acknowledging their GLBT staff. It's an extremely heteronormative environment. But because this company works in aerospace with a lot of ex-military, that's not surprising and not the reason to avoid UASC if you're GLBT. No, you should avoid this company if you're GLBT because Human Resources has demonstrated that if an employee is uncomfortable with your GLBT status (even if you never, not once, make it an issue in your 17.5 year career at UASC), HR will move heaven and earth to ensure that the discomforted, straight employee who reports to their GLBT boss will be catered to an extreme degree regardless of the straight employee's behavior and skill level. So if a poor performing direct report of a GLBT manager goes to HR after a couple of years of their regulary documented poor performance and states. hypothetically - "My boss' gender/sexuality status impacts my job performance" HR will move that employee to another department without discussing it with the GLBT manager, regardless of whether that negatively impacts their department, and will leave the GLBT manager out of the loop in regards to all discussions on the impact of that employee being moved out of their position. Would a decision like this empower the poor-performing employee to be more aggressive in their public denouncing of the GLBT manager? History has shown this to be true at UASC! So if you're GLBT and looking for a management position at UASC, I would look for other alternatives first. And second. And third. But that's

Pros

A lot of hard working people in the trenches trying to do a good job and some interesting technology. Nice facility but it's at least half empty.

Cons

Upper management has no vision and is just skating by. When it was pointed out that there were numerous inter-facility communications problems and poor middle managers they developed "1000 Days to 1 Universal." It took them a year to come up with some useless flash cards and a management retreat to make a slight change to the company motto. They couldn't even do that on their own, they had to hire a consultant.

Pros

Liberal PTO and TO. Good health benefits. Great co-workers on the manufacturing floor. Clean, comfortable, and well-organized facility and workstations. Well developed QMS and PLM systems.

Cons

Poor leadership. Managers don't know the difference between management and personnel leadership. Dishonest hiring practices. No training program or professional development whatsoever. No job advancement, even with proven performance. Low pay. Workflow and retention tied closely to things you have no control over. HR department is there for management, not for employees.
