I have been working at University College London full-time

    Pros

Surrounded by interesting, creative thinkers. The organisation genuinely is doing amazing things to change the world for good. Working there means that you are part of that. I moved from a small private company and I thought I wouldn't have much freedom, but I've found the opposite true

    Cons

Some of the buildings aren't ideal, but there's lots of development happening and slowly but surely it's getting much better :-)

I worked at University College London full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great Central London location and expansive estate. Well recognised university. Notable alumni. Has good benefits for long term employees. Good work life balance for some employees. Important research being undertaken.

    Cons

Elitist. Not enough space to accommodate staff and students. Decaying estate. Poor communication and ineffectual management. Some offices completely unsuitable for staff-cramped/too hot/cold/broken furniture/equipment. Outdated IT equipment and old fashioned systems. Good policies in place but they are flouted. The good benefits that do exist such as the pension are being eroded. Bullying, racism and discrimination are rife. After attending equality training a senior and well respected medic was visibly upset and remarked ‘you can’t discriminate against absolutely anyone these days not even dumb or old people’ this remark was said without irony and went unchallenged. Any complaints get swept under the carpet. Very little racial diversity at grade 7 and above despite a wealth of diverse talent in London and graduating from UCL. Doesn’t do well at recruitment, retention of suitably qualified British born people from the community it serves-London. Nepotism is practiced shamelessly. Jobs are advertised because they have to be-but there is already someone earmarked for the role and other candidates are interviewed as stooges, so candidates time and money is wasted. Poor treatment of agency workers. Professional services staff are extremely thin on the ground and covering more than 2 roles. Pay is not competitive.

    Advice to Management

Clean house and start again. The management does not represent the demographics of London be more ambitious about changing this. Review the salary structure. Upgrade the facilities.

I have been working at University College London full-time

    Pros

informal work environment, prestigious reputation and affliates

    Cons

    very disorganised department,
facilities are old and in need of updating/renovating
staff are stuck in old/ineffective habits and resistant to change,
management are tardy, partisan, self aggrandising and overbearing megalomaniacs.
There is an ad-hoc stucture: lack of consistency. Generally feels like staff and management are improvising and not entirely sure of what they are doing.
Goods and deliveries frequently go missing, unsure if this is due to the couriers or general stores

    Advice to Management

    Get organized!
    Listen to your staff
    Allow two way communication/exchange
